I would personally say that the second half of the 1990s was the pinnacle of the gaming industry so far in quality of games.

Gaming is however more accessible now and is cheaper as a hobby (It is here in the U.K and I assume it is similar elsewhere) than at any time previously. Games have stayed the same nominal price, or even fallen, despite rising prosperity and about 2% inflation. Services like the Virtual Console and PSN have allowed new gamers to experience the classics at a really affordable price (£8.40 for a game like Ogre Battle 64 is a steal).
