Wow, I never realized how ingenius their strategy was until I spelled it out.

I always considered "ingenious" to mean something positive and it does. It's another word for "clever".

Which makes me wonder why the word is used to describe Nintendo's 3DS strategy. If the 3DS's first year strategy was clever, then Ken Kutaragi's PS3 strategy was brilliant.

In time you will understand my orthography-loving friend. There is one crowd that is harder to please, and it is the core and older male crowd. Once they are locked in, the casual are a matter or pricing and Nintendo magic.

The ONLY threat to the latter part of the strategy is mobile/tablet/social gaming. But for that, hopefully Nintendo's new ideas (Brain Age 2, Animal Crossing, Mario 2D) can counter.

Nintendo wants to give professional analysts and website writers more to write about, in order to expose those groups for who they truly are. Ingenious!

Easy to take a jab at those who make the effort to actually elaborate.

@bold. All the while insulting them. You sir are getting a friendly prescription of "Report".

'Kay, have fun with that happydolphin. I'll, er, let you know how that works out for you.

P.S. Your idea that the core and older male crowd is the hardest to please with videogames is, quite simply, a (bad) joke. You have a brain, years of personal experience with gaming, and all the resources of the internet at your disposal. Use them before posting.

Why don't I find the 4.5m in the press release? Is it only in the title?

i thought it was just me...  I was wondering where the number came from too.

The news in OP is incomplete... there is a table.

http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=32977

        Nintendo DS*       Nintendo 3DS**
Launch date       Nov. 21, 2004       March 27, 2011
Total HW units sold in first 12 months       2.3 million       4.5 million
Total number of SW titles released in first 12 months       58       100+
Total units of software sold in first 12 months       5 million       9 million+
Total $ sales (HW, SW and accessory) in first 12 months       $540 million       $1.2 billion+

*Source: NPD **Source: Nintendo of America ***All Figures are U.S. Only

So the DS figure is Nov NPD 2004 - Oct NPD 2005. Kinda paints a deceiving picture. In 2 months it'll look very different.

You follow the same pedantics as all the other doubters, but fail to explain. There are multiple threads on core and casual and the dychotomy/non-dychotomy of them. If you have issue, go post there:

TruckOSaurus's What is a casual game (I posted my opinion in this one)

Theprof00's Casual vs Core vs Hardcore

If you actually knew me (like Rol actually does), you would know that I see way beyond the superficial opinion you suspect in me. Take your time to research and get to know me, then we'll talk.

I expect people to accurately and concisely communicate their thoughts and ideas to me when I converse with them. Any lower expectation is too patronizing, even for me. If the only way to understand you is to research you, your beliefs, and the support for those beliefs ahead of time, then I'm afraid I'm completely uninterested in doing so.

Feel free to get in whatever closing comments you wish, because I'm moving on after this post.

Actually, not really. By the end of December '05, the DS had only shifted (shipped) 4.63 million units in the Americas, not all of which went to the U.S. People tend to forget just how anemic the DS' launch really was, which is part of why I'm not particularly impressed by this bit of news. The DS didn't really take off until mid-2006, which I believe aligns with the 3DS' Q1 2014. If we keep seeing similar news releases after that time, then I'll start taking notice.

I don't expect to nuance every single point I make on here with clarifications because a new guy hasn't had the chance to follow my POV, yet reserves the right to call me unintelligent, unclever, and unclear. You can move on, but my opinion of you hasn't. If you care, take the time to rectify.

Nice!

I suppose there's still like in the handheld genre after all

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I will even extend my courtesy as to elaborate...

If you actually read what I posted without being so full of your own self-worth, you would have realized I even nuanced that post with qualifiers so as to disambiguate:

  • "older core crowd": To disambiguate from the younger, elderly or feminin core crowd.
  • "core content that also appeals to older gamers": To disambiguate from core content that appeals to everyone or everyone else.

This proves to me that you are truly full of condescention.
