Forums - Nintendo - Top 8 games that were wasted on the Wii

Just want to quickly say MLG does not want IR controls because they are a new challenge to officiate. Not because of popular demand. IR can be violated easily by any object intruding the space between it and the receptor. If someone or thing blocks thee IR path, do we restart? If the sensor bar falls, do we restart the whole match? Controllers do not have these issues so that is the way they decided to go with it.

Also, Wii games are not allowed to be streamed by MLG so that is why most Wii games are ignored. No stream means no revenue. This was brought up with Smash Bros. Brawl last year... even if they sold out each venue, there was very little money to be made because there was no stream. That is why the game is not returning.

MLG = some kind of gaming league?

Also, what happens if the batteries on your controller run out, does the game restart then? Surely things like that are the responsibility of the gamer... my sensor bar is blu-tacked to my TV for example.

MLG = Major League Gaming.

Another big issue with using IR controls for MLG is the ease as which you can introduce IR interference.  It's simply too easy interfere with someones game.

Battery life and things like that are the responsibilities of the gamer but someone walking between the television and the controller is something that may not be avoided or may harm the player but are NOT the fault of the player (running out of batteries is a players responsibility but someone NOT seeing where they are walking and interfering with a players performance is beyond player control... common sense here). If the sensor bar falls for some weird reason, is that the players fault? No (MLG sets up all systems and the like so it is literally NOT the players responsibility). So with that said, the challenge of officiating matches using IR due to freak accidents is extremely picky and fragile. The best case is to try avoiding such incidents and this is why dual analog is still so widely accepted.

MLG = Major League Gaming.

Right, so if I understand it correctly, MLG involved players competing against each other in the same room, because otherwise how do you interfere with someone's IR. I can only assume each player is kept seperate from each other with their own screen though because otherwise it's just as easy to knock someone's elbow or otherwise break their concentration. Either way it's surely easy enough to disqualify someone for interfering.

The streaming thing sounds like a legit excuse at least... I assume the games are streamed for other people to watch the competition online or whatever.... Any idea why MLG isn't allowed to stream Wii games though? because I can't understand why not. Unless Nintendo are being bitchy about it (profit organisation using their games) but then that would extend to Smash Bros. Melee which I am sure I heard has lots of competitive matches (unless they are all non-profit and not asscociated with MLG?)

Also, for the record, it is standard MLG practice to only allow wired controllers. However, when these rules are bent or broken, the responsibility lies with the player exclusively.

I went to MLG Orlando and was not allowed to use my Classic Controller because they only allowed me to use wired Gamecube controllers.

I don't get it.

Seems strict, defo not my kind of thing.

Yes, MLG is an in-person event. They have online rankings but their events are all in person.

Nintendo does not allow for streaming of any games on their console because basically, they are not wanting to be associated with anything that Sony or in this case, Microsoft endorses. I am thinking they would have to pay something to Microsoft either directly or indirectly, which we all know they will not do (DVD playback as a prime example).

Players normally get on their own system. I have not seen Halo players playing on the same system but then again, I do not actively watch Halo or anything. There is no interference like there can be with IR because the controller cannot be impeded by the most random of activities. I referee the fighting games.

No, you're all in a big rooms together.

Take a look at these pics.   The amount of IR interference would be nuts.
