If it's all on Nintendo, then is there any chance for a 2D mario or Mario Kart anywhere near launch?

No. The main Mario Kart team probably won't release anything until late 2013/2014, and the 2D Mario team is supposedly at work on Pikmin 3, and the newly announced 2D Mario for the 3DS.

The Mario Kart team needs more than a year after 7 to release a new iteration, and the 2D Mario team is already working on Pikmin and the 3DS game. At this point, the Wii U's most likely launch titles are Pikmin 3, a Pokemon spinoff, a Wii Fit/Sports/Party kind of game, an Epic Yarn sequel, a new Excite-Racer, and Retro's big project. Not a terrible lineup, but no 10 million seller in sight, except for Wii U Sports.

The reaction to the Wii U at GDC is "mixed" and Nintnendo is "screwed"

  • Wii U chatter was mixed on day 2. A financial analyst told me Nintendo is screwed. Not enough time to be out on their own. A developer told me their fortunes are mixed. Good ambition on Nintendo's part, but, well... it's Nintendo, everyone says it's on Nintendo for the thing to succeed. Same as it ever was. It's almost all on them.

As for that analyst, is sounds like something Pachter would say, although we can’t be sure it’s him, so do hold back with the fire and pitch-forks. But this does feel very same-y. No matter what Nintendo does, it’s the end for them, apparently. They can’t make any move that isn’t “wrong”, despite making a lot of smart decisions.

That’s not to say the Wii U is a guaranteed success. There will be challenges, but we did just come off eight months of 3DS-bashing because it had apparently failed, and as soon as it started selling well, it’s not like the critics stated as such. They just jumped onto their next target.

Quite reasonable, seems legit (really legit, not the meme) not on the Nintendo's screwed, but on the developer part. Nintendo needs to have a back-up plan in case the industry goes, ....well the same way they've gone since the Gamecube.

lol annalists. the are funny

The World will be stunned when Nintendo surprise everybody at E3 and revealing a second controller

The u-mote/u-pad also comes in a head version.. (Gyro controlled = VR)

It will be a controller/addon like singstar or rockband.. and have dedikated games.. but can show all other on a custom sized viretuel screen and room.. There will be no need for tv screen.. BUT tv screen will offcourse show the 1 or 2 players playing (like always) perhaps one could interagere with the u-pad..

Newer the less.. the world will go crazy.. and Nintendo will sell more than wii, and in the same time set a new standard there will chance the world forever.. Buy nintendo stocks.. they will tripple with in a year..

The WiiU at GDC is likely the exact same stuff they showed at last E3 and therefore... not much.

There will be no real new WiiU news until this coming E3... besides maybe a 3rd party game confirmation or two similar to how AC3 was confirmed.

I wouldn't be surprised. Due to WiiU though, not 3DS (it doesn't have the casual explosive SW sales just yet).

To Carl, I think NSMB Mii is almost done (my speculation). The game is low production (doesn't require many resources), and they already had a working demo for e3 last year, likely running off much work previously done on NSMBWii. I suspect it a launch title, you can quote me on it.

Happydolphim# 3DS Will help to.. It's a monster..:) and the reason the nintendo stock are showing some redem last 2 month..

True, HW wise it's a monster, but keep in mind HW sales =/= SW sales. To recall, DS SW sales:

PosGamePlatformYearGlobal
1 New Super Mario Bros. DS 2006 28.09
2 Nintendogs DS 2005 24.36
3 Mario Kart DS DS 2005 21.74
4 Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day DS 2005 19.94
5 Pokémon Diamond / Pearl Version DS 2006 17.97
6 Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day DS 2005 15.20
7 Pokémon Black / White Version DS 2010 13.77
8 Animal Crossing: Wild World DS 2005 11.74
9 Pokémon Heart Gold / Soul Silver Version DS 2009 11.22
10 Super Mario 64 DS DS 2004 9.55
11 Mario Party DS DS 2007 8.44

There is nothing looking like that for the near future (even 1 year down) on 3DS, not even Nintendogs+Cats. Reason is, Nintendo's strategy is adult-core focused at the moment, but it's only temporary. Once the core is locked in, they'll likely change their marketing stance and go all-out casual, but I expect that to happen 1 year post WiiU-launch.
