Don't expect NFC games at launch.

While Nintendo's Wii U will support Near Field Communication, none of the 50 games available for the console through March will support the technology, Nintendo confirmed today.
While NFC-like technology is used in the Skylanders games to help save and deliver an action figure's stats and upgrades to the different consoles the game is on, it won't rely on the Wii U's support of the tech when Skylanders: Giants comes to the console.
"We did entertain the idea," Nick Ruepp, producer at Vicarious Visions, said. "We didn’t want to cripple the GamePad the entire time just so you could put your Skylander on the GamePad."
The GamePad's reader rests in the bottom left corner of the controller, and Skylanders requires that you leave the figure in place on the reader while playing the game. Once you lift the champion up from the game's portal, it leaves the game.
Developers working on Rayman Legends said they entertained the idea of using the reader to import characters into the Wii U title. The ability was even showcased in an internal video leaked earlier this year, but ultimately they decided not to include it in their game.
Nintendo product manager Bill Trinen confirmed that none of the existing known titles for the Wii U support the technology.
"That is a new tech, particularly with it being available in the U.S.," he said. "A lot of the developers are wondering what are the options? How do we leverage it? As they start to come with their ideas, solutions and great content, we will talk more about it.
"I don't anticipate it will be too far out."
