Pretty much what MarcusDJackson said... when the 360 is discontinued. It's selling way too well in NA for Sony to catch up to it within the next year, and it'll most likely be severely discounted or possibly discontinued altogether the way the original Xbox was after the 720 launches.

... gen doesn't matter. Sales are sales regardless of what gen they happen. WiivsPS2 sales prove that a system can initially outsell another in alligned launches and still sell much less lifetime. What that means is just because a system's first few years were better doesn't mean its last few years will be. I guarantee you the ps3 won't ship 15mil this year like the 360 did last year. 

Ofc I am not saying the ps3 has no chance of outselling the 360 lifetime.What I am saying is its pointless to try and compare alligned launches as some type of proof that the ps3 will outsell the 360 because the facts are the ps3 launched a year late and that will never change and that has nothing to do with what future sales will be. For the past 2 years 360/ps3 sales have been nearly identical and total shipments are actually in favor of the 360 despite the fact the 360 is an older console. Yes the ps3's first couple of years were stronger than the 360. That doesn't automatically mean its last few years will be as strong as 360's will be. 

If ever, which I'm not sure it will. No sooner than Q3 -Q4 2014.

Microsoft is not going to drop the Xbox 360 like they had to do with the Xbox, and will sell it like the PS2 in it's later (last) years for ~$99 and perhaps start selling it in countries which they currently aren't or can't yet.

And if it ever does manage, it won't matter anymore, next-gen will have started then.

The fact that they are from different gens is irrelevant to my point, which you are missing.

360 and WiiU will both be vying for consumer's money this holiday.  It's only good business sense for a 360 price drop to try and make it look like a more attractive purchase this holiday, hence it will help to keep PS3 from closing the gap as well.

But in all seriousness, it looks inevitable at this point. Just a matter of when.. I don't think it'll happen as soon as many think. It will probably take at least another 2 years, at whcih point, we will have moved on to the next generation and only the most diehard Sony fanboys and vgchartz regulars will have knowledge of it. But as some said here, it won't really make a difference anyway, aside from bragging rights. I think Wii is tangible proof that 3rd parties don't give a damn who has the sales advantage. They're going to make the game on the platform(s) they want regardless..

Never, unless PS3 actively sells for a least 6 months after 360 is withdrawn from the market. And if PS4 and Nextbox launch at the same time then I think it will simply be never ever. This year has pretty much shown that the strength of 360 in the USA now that Wii on on the wane pretty much counterbalances the rest o fthe world and annual sales are going to be pretty even between the 2. I think in the course of 2013 PS3 may be able to close the gap to under 2 million before the holidays start, but then the USA boost will kick in and 360 will widen the gap again. I say there'll only be a few hundred K between PS3 and 360 in any given year.
