Club Nintendo Japan even did this weird thing where it was available to a select few (don't remember if you had to get platinum status or if it just cost a lot of stars), and for some reason they bothered to include an online mode for the couple thousand that got the game in this manner.

Made me think they were preparing for localization in Japan but AFAIK it never happened.

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

don't you find it odd that not only would they go through the trouble of localization but even go as far as host free multiplayer for such a tiny userbase?
