I will be going to Japan one of my semesters, though that's at least two years away since I wouldn't study abroad until my third year at earliest and I will be studying Japanese so it can't hurt to wait. But anyway I envy you so much what I would give to be able to study in Japan right now...

anyway, looks nice, later this year I will be applying to the JET program since schools in the US seem to think engineers shouldn't be teaching mathematics but jocks and airhead whose big claim is that they were awful in math in high school is proof positive they should now teach it.  Though the experience would probably be hugely different as if accepted I'd probably be in Hokkaido.

Funnily enough JET selected me for an interview earlier this month, but apparently it absolutely had to be in New York or i had to withdraw my application, so i did. I may, however, look at private companies if I am unable to find a job in America. Or, hell, i could do it in other countries. I know someone who was rejected from JET who went on to teach in South Korea, not knowing a lick of Korean. Korea has good wages but a low cost of living, so it would even out and let me gain headway on student loans...

Then let yourself be invited by a group of drunk Japanese students who will happily pay your bill if you get drunk with them.

fortunately for me I live a few hours from new york, I was aware of the competitive nature, but figure it should help that I have a masters, speak Japanese fairly well, and have been teaching English as a second language to Karen refugees for the past year or so, which has the also gave me the unique boon of being one of only a few hundred Americans to speak Karen.

Hell, i didn't even know there were Karen refugees in America. Figured most of them just fled into what, Thailand right (forget which part of Myanmar the Karen inhabit). Impressive, sir.

Initially, but Thailand doesn't really want them their either, but they don't want them dead so the situation is precarious.  Most leaving Thailand end up in the US, some to Canada and the Scandinavian countries.. Shame they have to come here but I absolutely love working with them.
