Wow, amazing experiences you all seem to have. I'll be visiting Japan someday. I feel the urge to do so.

Hmm but that's with cooking yourself - when i was there we were eating in bars , with breakfasts from 7/11 and including something to drink during the day (C.C. Lemon FTW ;) ) it was 1500-2000 per day

Also beer and other drinks are rather expensive :)

I rarely bumped into someone who didn't speak English, in major cities at least. Boy did I ask a lot of strangers for directions though. As a matter of fact, that's all you need to do is ask for directions or help when at doubt. Train stations drove me nuts! But I remember a kind police woman explain to me  colors of signs correspond to different trains or something. This was four years ago and I forget.

bwahaha! That's why I never pretended to speak Japanese.I got scolded once for trying. I used to frequent a privately owned coffe shop every morning and a couple of girls there would try to teach me words. All I remember from their lessons is one of them telling, "don't say 'seyenora', it's rude. Say matane"

Congratulations op, if I had the youth, the money, and the no responsibilities I had 5 years ago, I'd be back in Japan in a heart beat. ~jealous

Yeah, all the JR trains are color-coded. The private lines are as well, to a point. A decent rail-map will get you through most of it

Of course! Eating outside can become quite expensive. But 2000 Yen per day for a limited time isn't so bad.

Beer is indeed very expensive.
