Forums - Sales - Xbox 360 tops Wii and PS3 for 1st time in yearly global sales

I have no idea what will happen.  But it's amusing to me how VGC has the 360 at 13.4 sold (vs 14.9 shipped) and the PS3 at 14.0 sold (vs 14.1 shipped).  Yet there aren't 4 threads with 200 posts demanding adjustments and preaching the importance of shipped over sold as there were when the roles were reversed in previous years.  Doesn't that come off a bit ... hypocritical for many?

And the Wii descrepancy is an entirely different matter all together ...

Right, i'm going to break this down for you & everybody else who is having trouble understanding how shipping & the retail channel work because i can see that a lot of people just don't understand the numbers. Because we don't have Jan-March 2012 fiscal numbers yet we can't show to what extent Microsoft overshipped during the previous quarter of Oct-Dec 2011, however we do have Oct-Dec 2010 & Jan-March 2011's numbers to use as an example of microsoft overshipping in a quarter this year.

When companies sell products not only do they need to ship enough to sell to consumers, they also need to ship enough to have a healthy supply chain of consoles on shelves, in warehouses & in transit.

During the quarter of Oct-Dec 2010 Microsoft shipped 6.3 million consoles, yet using Vgchartz numbers you can see that for that quarter they actually sold 6.89 million consoles. Between retail & Microsoft they underestimated how many consoles they would sell & ended up undershipping for that quarter. When this happened there were shortages at the end of the year & the normal amount of consoles that should have been in the retail chain became depleted. To make up for undershipping in the Oct-Dec 2010 quarter Microsoft now had to overship in the Jan-March 2011 quarter to make up for this.

Normally for the Jan-March quarter Microsoft ships between 1.3-1.7 million consoles as shown in there fiscal statements............. in Jan-March 2011 they shipped 2.7 million consoles instead. There was no price cut for the 360 in Jan-March, there were no special offers, there were no mega blockbuster console selling exclusives released for the console either so why did the xbox360 go from shipping its normal 1.3-1.7 million consoles to 2.7 million consoles in that quarter??? The answer is simple, Microsoft had to overship to make up for undershipping the previous quarter.

And to further back up the overshipping of Jan-March 2011 you only have to look at the next few quarters of Microsoft's 2011 sales and compare them 2010's sales. If by some magic the xbox360 for no apparent reason suddenly became significantly more popular in Jan-March 2011, then this trend in sales should continue over the following months then right?........ From April-Sep 2011 Mircosoft shipped 4 million consoles, however from April-Sep 2010 Mircosoft shipped 4.3 million consoles. How does it make any sense that worldwide the xbox360 during Jan-March 2011 became significantly more popular by almost double compared to what it sold in Jan-March 2010 to then go on to sell less during April-Sep 2011 compared to April-Sep 2010? The answer is it doesn't make any logical sense and yet again confirms that Microsoft overshipped during Jan-March 2011.

Regardless of wether Microsoft overshipped in Oct-Dec 2011 it is already a fact that they overshipped in Jan-March 2011.

He didn't break jack down for me because I wasn't talking about the details of the shipping/sold debate.  I was talking about the BEHAVIOR of the community and how attitudes about shipped vs sold, overshipping vs over-ordering and the indisputable accuracy of VGC's numbers tend to flip-flopped based on where the PS3 or 360 fall in that dynamic.  THAT is the hypocrisy I'm referring to.

It's pretty simple, this website has a history of more often than not overtracking the xbox360 compared to the ps3. I am not saying at all in the slightest that this is deliberate, it's just a flaw in Vgchartz tracking system. Take this christmas, in December Vgchartz overtracked the 360 by nearly 1 million in America alone, that's huge. And when posters constantly see a patern of 360 overtracking or ps3 undertracking, then when the numbers look a bit low for the ps3 then people rightfully make posts about it because inevitably these 'ps3 fans' are right.

Dude, you just said "it's amusing to me how VGC has the 360 at 13.4 sold (vs 14.9 shipped) and the PS3 at 14.0 sold (vs 14.1 shipped).  Yet there aren't 4 threads with 200 posts demanding adjustments and preaching the importance of shipped over sold"

WHAT ADJUSTMENTS DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO DEMAND?

You do realize that if the situation was reversed and the PS3 was in the 360's position, you'd a multiple threads with PS3 fans screaming bloody murder. This site has huge Sony bias.

You still don´t understand that at this point VGchartz numbers simply can´t be criticized. And guess what, it is not because PS3 is on top, it´s because there are 1.7M PS3s and 2M 360s on the shelves according to our numbers compared to official shipped numbers.

So that is why understanding that MS had to ship 1M more consoles in the first quarter then normal because there were REPORTED shortages last Q of 2010 is crucial.

So guess what, regardless of whether you are hypocrite, fanboy, troll, blind, whatever there is no argument RIGHT NOW to call for adjustments. So what you just did was bash the "community" for not doing what they could not do because they have no facts to back up adjustments to VGC numbers.

On the other hand I can bash the "community", that presents fancy graphics and articles about shipped numbers that the world already knows, and tries to pass them as "Guess what 360 sold more then the PS3", but I will not because those are pure entertainment.

Maybe MS will delay the 720 after all. The 360's sales curve is completely contrary to the norm for a video game console.

I am thinking the same thing.  I would think it just depends how much of a threat they think the WiiU will be, and the impact of it's sales.

I sounds like Microsoft is letting Nintendo use DirectX 10.1 for the WiiU so not sure if that means they want to make the OS software for the systems more than hardware.  Or if they think the X720 will be so much different/better that the Nintendo isn’t much of a threat.

New hardware/software is expensive and why fix it when it's already working well.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Once again, I don´t care what people have said in the past.

The "community" was bashed because they haven´t made threads asking for adjustments, and you are saying that if this was the other way around people would be screaming for them, but that is absolute speculation based on nothing. Facts win over fanboyism, and there is no number right now that indicates adjustments, it will change in the future with next Q reports.

Why isn´t this "community" asking for adjustments for December 360 numbers in US based on NPD? Why isn´t this "community" asking for adjustments for PS3 Europe based on Nintendo numbers?

Stop being defensive about it, and stop bashing people for not doing what they should not do, ask for adjustments.

This looks like a normal sales discussion... Everyone replying every which way.
