Forums - PC - AMD Radeon HD 7900 series brings us closer to Pixar quality graphics; behold ‘Leo’ DX11 Tech-demo

Not that impressive, and it completely doesn't matter since no game could afford the expense to take full advantage of 79xx's power. The limit to PC game fidelity is clearly budget now.

I mean, bad console ports will max it out, and DX11 effects (stupid levels of tesselation) layered on top of one another will use GPU resources without making it look better.

I wonder how long the high-end GPU's profit margins will last, if a <$100 GPU can run all games on the market at 1920x1200 30fps 4xAA without 3D/multi-monitor/extreme tesselation.

Also lol if anyone thinks this is going in a console, or even that a 76xx/77xx/78xx is. Power use needs to be far, far lower than the 225W this is rated at.

I assume you are referring to the TDP? It won't be that hard to dissipate the heat to be honest, cooling solutions now are far more efficient than they were somefive years ago. Of course there would be the risk of featuring a half-assed internal design who makes one in two consoles to overheat, but I think we are past such blunders.

But yeah, we probably won't... as far as AMD-powered consoles are concerned. The GK100/104 chips are going to run circles around the HD 7000 series and a chopped mid-range chip (say using only two thirds of it's clusters, still as powerful as a GTX 580, cheap due to high yields), could still power a reasonably priced PS4/X720 if it follows the hardcore route.

NEXT XBOX GRAPHICS PLEASE!

Next Xbox graphics, if the early reports are correct, will be HD 6670 level.

While a poor, aged cousin to the 7900 series, this is not to say that many of the features of the 7900 series won't be implemented into the custom version of the 6670  being designed for the Xbox.

It's really that bad? Hell the 4870 in the WiiU is better >.>

Isnt the WiiU also rumoured to have a mid range 6000 series card :/

Intel Core i7 3770K [3.5GHz]|MSI Big Bang Z77 Mpower|Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1866 2 x 4GB|MSI GeForce GTX 560 ti Twin Frozr 2|OCZ Vertex 4 128GB|Corsair HX750|Cooler Master CM 690II Advanced|

Just a history question: When the 360 and ps3 released, were their gpu's current or from previous series?

i wasnt into tec back then as i am now so i didnt really follow that kinda thing.

The 360's Xenos chip was a glorified ATI X1800. It had been out for about a month and a half.

The PS3's Reality Synthesizer was a glorified Nvidia Geforce 7800 GT. Which had been out for about a year before PS3 hit the market.

What are Pixar quality graphics anyway. Pixar keeps advancing too every year. The difference between Toy story 3 and the first one is unbelievable. Anyway can't help but posting my favorite Pixar short.

Last year Rango blew me away, a new benchmark.

See, they shouldn't talk about getting closer to Pixar (movie) quality, now that AMD video looks dull :)

So they both released with fairly current gpu's, pretty strong ones to in their time. Compare that to the current rumours, which should have the 360 release with a mid range 6000 series card at the end of 2013, at which point we would already have the 8000 series from AMD :/

It looks like the graphics of ps3 and 360

No reliable source has stated that rumor.

All references state the Wii U GPU is based upon AMD's R700 design, more specifically, the RV770, and even more specifically, a modified version of the commercially available HD4850 from 2008.

Frankly, I'm not even sure what the point of such comparisons are anyway.

High quality pre-rendered video ("Pixar quality graphics") will always trump video rendered on the fly. If not, does anyone really think any production company would bother to use render farms that cost millions to produce their final output?

Even pre-rendered video isn't rendered one whole frame at a time; each frame is composited by a whole range of pre-rendered layers to create the final frame edited into the final cut of a CG film.

For every step forward made in on the fly rendered visuals, the same number of steps forward are made in pre-rendered video, meaning there wil never be a time in which the latest Pixar film is rendered on the fly by a $500 off the shelf video card.

At best, fair comparisons can be made between what can be produced on the fly by current commercial VGA cards and pre-rendered video from select CG films from several years ago.
