Anyway can't help but posting my favorite Pixar short. Last year Rango blew me away, a new benchmark. See, they shouldn't talk about getting closer to Pixar (movie) quality, now that AMD video looks dull :) |
Frankly, I'm not even sure what the point of such comparisons are anyway.
High quality pre-rendered video ("Pixar quality graphics") will always trump video rendered on the fly. If not, does anyone really think any production company would bother to use render farms that cost millions to produce their final output?
Even pre-rendered video isn't rendered one whole frame at a time; each frame is composited by a whole range of pre-rendered layers to create the final frame edited into the final cut of a CG film.
For every step forward made in on the fly rendered visuals, the same number of steps forward are made in pre-rendered video, meaning there wil never be a time in which the latest Pixar film is rendered on the fly by a $500 off the shelf video card.
At best, fair comparisons can be made between what can be produced on the fly by current commercial VGA cards and pre-rendered video from select CG films from several years ago.
