Interesting o.O
They certainly need something to turn the business around. Perhaps Kaz can pull it off, but the comments in the article all seemed pretty 'steady as she goes', which isn't what Sony needs.

Why did Sony even bother denying all those reports three weeks ago. Welcome change, Stringer has been a massive disappointment, hopefully Kaz can do a proper restructuring.

Then he will set about restructuring sectors and will come up against the same brick walls that Stringer did. Its interesting as Kaz's background is software/media really and here he is committed to "turning the TV business around", you have to wonder if it is worth it or if it is even possible. But then Sony see the TV as central to their entire integrated approach from hereon so I guess they need to turn it around. But given that Kaz has been in charge of the TV and other enterntainment devices division (TV, PS, Phones, Wakmans, Vaio etc etc) since 2009 you also have to question if he is capable of delivering the reform. |
The only way they can turn their tv venture though is a total rebranding . They should ditch the bravia logo and just start making tv's at a competitive price point. Right now people look at a 42" barvia for $150 dollars more than the samsung equivalent and go why should I buy the sony tv?? The general public couldnt give a toss about refresh rates or internet on their tv, all they want to know is can it do HD so they will obviously pick the cheaper tv.
Sony used to be THE premier brand of TV to own, so they could charge like Apple for their TVs and people would pay. Same for VHS players, DVD players, and Stereos to a certain extent. Now they aren't and their pricing needs to reflect that. Most Sony TVs are still in the upper quartile of price for a particular size and spec. They can still produce models in the high price range, but they also need models that attract mid-price bracket buyers.
I paid more than I needed to for our TV because the wife wanted Sony, not Samsung. I was happy to go with Samsung, or LG. I lost.

Sure... blame the wife. How convenient. |
I put up a fight, honest. TBH she said she preferred the picture quality of the Bravia over the Samsung, so it wasn't just a brand name thing. I didn't really think there was much difference.

And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
