Sony used to be THE premier brand of TV to own, so they could charge like Apple for their TVs and people would pay. Same for VHS players, DVD players, and Stereos to a certain extent. Now they aren't and their pricing needs to reflect that. Most Sony TVs are still in the upper quartile of price for a particular size and spec. They can still produce models in the high price range, but they also need models that attract mid-price bracket buyers.
I paid more than I needed to for our TV because the wife wanted Sony, not Samsung. I was happy to go with Samsung, or LG. I lost. |

I put up a fight, honest. TBH she said she preferred the picture quality of the Bravia over the Samsung, so it wasn't just a brand name thing. I didn't really think there was much difference.
