Ha at the COE comment.
I think if they were to do a shooter it'd have to be immaginative and original, not a typical war shooter.

Really?? You'd think otherwise the way MS was talking it up. WIth its whole better with Kinect and you are the controller, maybe they should just say you are the controller for some games?
No but really, who in their right mind saw the kinect and then played it and thought FPSs could work with this! If you did, then you were an idiot. I like Kinect because it took what made Wii popuar and made it better
So Kinect is for casuals and only an alternative for the hardcore?

"...you are the controller for some games?"
Yeah... VERY catchy.
Yay!!!

The problem isn't the people who get it but those who don't. There is plenty of silly hype spread about what Kinect "could do" or "will do" once developers work it out, combined with MS themselves putting out speculative vids which imply a lot more than can be delivered. That backdrop is why we're going to keep hearing "give it time" from one side and "bollocks it's not a good fit" from the other.
Kinect will clearly never be the best choice for a traditional shooter as main control scheme. It's just not possible. It's great when used correctly - no doubt about it. But the problem I feel is too much of the fanbase is trying to push it's capabilities as being more than they are which will always draw a response from the other side.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
And he's certainly right, at least if you just take something like Call of Duty and slap Kinect on to it and call it a day.
Whether a good shooter, that isn't on rails at least, can be made for Kinect remains to be seen. There is no doubt that the player wouldn't be able to respond like if he was playing with a physical controller, but that's a design issue. A shooter doesn't need to throw tons of enemies at you to be exciting, and trying to go for fewer, but more intelligent encounters could be a way of working around it.
Either way, as far as movement goes, progress is being made too. Haunt is a good example of full 3D movement done well on Kinect for example.
Ruling out shooters as something that isn't suitable for Kinect is silly at this point I think. Ruling out the Call of Dutys, Battlefields and Ghost Recons in their current form makes complete sense however.

Not trying to dick you around but that honestly sounds awesome.

People who know little about gaming (casuals for want of a better phrase) dont hear or see those hype "could do's" and those that are into gaming understand that Kinect isnt for that. It really is a non-issue. I am also not aware of thiss "fan base" that are pushing its capabilities. |
I'm not really referring to the casual audience. The comments were made by a developer and will be visible and absorbed by the online community accordingly that is active for this kind of stuff. I agree it's all a non-issue but it is a real scenario. By fan base I'm talking about how most every gaming forum will have a post on "Kinect does FPS after all" based on some suspect Youtube video. The developers watch the community and respond to this.
To put it another way - why would he make comments like that unless he felt he had something to comment to? Sure he's looking for a bit of a sound bite but you need a relevant target for it to work. He knows that online there is a fair bit of interest and speculation on whether Kinect "can do" FPS, or TPS or any of the traditional core genres.
I'm sure your average Wii, PS3 and 360 customer is oblivious to a lot of this - totally agreed. But the active online commumity does.
I was just really noting it's a bit of a two way situation where comments about Kinect, Move, etc. are often based on general industry/active fanbase musings and perception.
