Forums - Gaming - Updated - Naughty Dog: Reviews that say other games have amazing stories are disheartening to us

Its a silly thing to say, without saying which games they're actually talking about. Things like saying GTA4 had an "oscar worthy" story, for example, would be disheartening to somone trying to write a great videogame story.

Naughty Dog seem to be on a high horse recently after the Uncharted success.

And... they just had to slip over a banana and make a retarded statement somewhere didn't they. :/

It's not like the Uncharted games are masterpieces of story telling, so whoever the guy was that said that, is an idiot.

In other words:

More time trying to make TLoU awesome, less time making dumb statements.

Is The Last of Us an actual game? I thought it was some kind of an insider joke about Sony closing their studios one after another.

O.o

I absolutely agree with him. Video game stories are generally of a horrible standard and have a far way to go. It doesn't help, when overly kind reviewers praise a narrative purely because it manages to make sense lol. I haven't played uncharted 3 but uncharted 2 story was decent, but it was told brilliantly. More games need to step up to the standard!

It's a Video game though. Silly ppl tend to want to compare Video game stories to movies and books, media focused on just that.. telling stories. for Video games the stories we get are fine for this type of media so it is ok that reviewers are pass lesser quality stories compared to Uncharted. Stories in Video game should aim to be one thing... entertaining... regardless of mood... this oscar worthy/ 5 Star book stuff doesn't belong here. Video games are not the right media for that, its annoying to see ND pioneering this type of behavior.

isn't that a really narrow way of thinking? if the stories are mediocre why settle for it? why not point it out? A great story will only enhance the experience. Not all games would require this..for example Vanquish..despite the saw that coming from miles away story ..it was enjoyable..but if it had a better story it would have been a masterpeice. Cheap and simple entertainment from books and movies/tv shows exist too but it doesn't mean those industries as a whole should accept that to be 'acceptable' norm. So I completely disagree with you with your statement, tho I agree it all comes down to personal preference and what a gamer would desire from this hobby

"if the stories are mediocre why settle for it? why not point it out?" Because we dont need to. Video games should be used as the media for telling the kind of stories ND wants to tell. Story is important to Video game but not as important as ND believes or wants it be. ppl do not buy games for that level of story telling. Resident Evil has huge mythos that is adored by RE fans... but its B class movie shit but thats ok though because it is entertaining

see now you are just generalizing a lot....personal preference wise it may be ok for you if the games are entertaining with a bgrade story..But I for example want that great story driven experiences. I don't agree with you on RE story btw..I don't think the issue there is with the story..but how they tell it which kinda sucks overall. Same goes for many other games. I don't think either your nor me can define what video games 'should' be tho outside of what they mean for 'us' . I like to see more innovation and improvement in many areas including gameplay...but story is a definite part of it. I can't see how you would argue that, again a game like vanquish, with a better story would be a bad thing? surely that's an improvement for the overall experience

Okay, I made a thread that included that quote a few days ago and I was told it was a duplicate (even though it was not) and the thread was locked. Now a thread that only includes said quote taken out of context is not seen as a duplicate. Wtf?

this really is a really really old quote

This is semi-ridculous to me. his comment is too ambigious to be considered a direct insult. but who the hell are these guys to say this.

look at Uncharted 2. sure it might be a great game. but the story itself. a Russian dictator hell bent on taking over the world with a magical blue liquid... its not much more than a cartoon show. people like it, but the story of these games isnt what attracts fans, its the cinematic presentation.

that being said, i love games with excellent stories. and i find it hard to believe that they havent heard of games like; Chrono Trigger, FF7, Enslaved, Vagrant Story, FF Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Metal Gear Solid 1, Silent Hill 2, God of War, Assassin's Creed 1, etc. there are of course a lot more.

and this game looks a lot like Enslaved, which consequently had a very good story and very good cinematic presentation. so i'm not sure what hes saying is justified.

Since no one is specifically mentioned in the quote...why is everyone getting in a tiz?

My understanding of this is me saying I'm better than some folks at being cool but without mentioning anyone's name. Exactly why should anyone be offended when no one is mentioned. Correct me if I'm wrong.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

One thing I hate about this generation. A lot of people are not reading just posting for the sake of posting.
