Forums - Gaming - Update: See Mass Effect 3's Kinect Voice Commands in Action, Prep for the Beta

Incorporating the Kinect's voice command ability into Mass Effect 3's gameplay for the 360 may not be revolutionary, or necessary even as a few other comments pointed out, but there's absolutely no argument here that it significantly adds to the immersion and overall exerience.... and isn't that what we as gamers truly want.
Anyone on these boards trivializing that, or finding something in there to complain about, is nothing more than envy disguised as indifference.
If these voice commands for Mass Effect 3 weren't system specific, in other words, if they were also being intergrated into the PS3 and PC, I doubt you'd see a single complaint.
So... what does that tell you? Seems pretty obvious.

Wow what a waste of money. My bluetooth headset can do the exact same thing.

Yes and no. Voice commands can be done with nearly any microphone, but Kinect makes it much easier to integrate into games.

"Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson says BioWare is bringing voice commands to Kinect and Xbox 360 because Microsoft's sound and motion-sensing controller is doing the hard work of voice recognition. Kinect's internal hardware is what makes it possible—or at least much easier to get voice commands working—not just its microphones."

I've only seen the voice part in action and that's not necessary if they are adding gestures as well that's a different story.

Just to add to this, IGN just posted a preview of the voice commands, saying things like:

"At CES last week I had the opportunity to play the demo for myself, and I came away impressed by what I saw. "

"Most important of all is that this Kinect integration just works."

"... the ability to play through entire Mass Effect action set-pieces without ever accessing the game's power wheel felt great – it might be hard to go back."

I picked Kinect up a while ago for my wife and kids. It's been gathering dust for almost 9 months now as it failed to impress but it may get a second chance if this works as intended.

Obviously, otherwise they would make this possible for all platforms.

Voice commands have existed for a long time, but they have required a lot of time and effort (i.e. money) to implement. Kinect changes this, because it handles much of the voice recognition with its own hardware, meaning developers don't have to struggle to implement it.

If BioWare were to bring the voice commands to other platforms, they would have to implement their own system from the ground up, which would be very expensive. But on the 360, it's easy to do through Kinect. Hence why it's there and not on the other platforms.

A demo for forthcoming action RPG sequel Mass Effect 3 launches on PC, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live on 14th February, developer BioWare has announced.

The taster lets you play through the Reaper's initial assault on Earth - a sequence which kicks off the game.

It will also showcase the title's new multiplayer mode. Those who've activated an online pass for Battlefield 3 get early access to that portion of the demo, with general population allowed in from 17th February.

I can't wait for this game! The Kinect features are just a plus and from what I hear work very well. Not having to open the power wheel and just saying, "sniper" sounds so much faster and easier.

Take your headset out of your ear and put it across the room and see how good the voice recognition is now.
