the 360 outselling the ps3 in europe is as unlikely as the ps3 having come out on top last NPD. we just knew 360 sold more just like how we know ps3 sold more in europe.

This response is directed at JimmyDanger, too.
Very true. In just 2 weeks we should have EU numbers from Nintendo.
I say its the end of the discussion, but I'm sure some people will be still be posting how 2.x million consoles on shelves is just too much, while completely ignoring the obvious miscalculation in demand because of Nov numbers.

I agree man. While not the end of THE discussion per se - but the end of THIS discussion. Numbers forthcoming!
Nothing to see here - move along.
It's been fun, you were all great!

As far as MS is concerned, "sold to retailers" is the most important thing for its finances, as "sold to retailers" means "paid to MS", and this could make solar year 2011 and solar Q4 2011 the best ever for XB360, a huge achievement for a console launched in 2005.
If due to November sales retailers overestimated possible December ones and the stocks needed, the biggest problem is for them, they'll have to make clearance sales offers even crazier than BF ones to sell them.
Excess stocks could hit Q1 2012 numbers for MS, though, but, first, it's a slow quarter anyway, second, retailers will have to bite the bullet and take the burden to make the offers necessary to empty their shelves and stores, and wholesalers their warehouses, and they can't blame MS if they ordered excessive stocks, OTOH they coudn't anyway risk shortages if Xmas happened to be bigger than a huge BF in the same usual proportion of previous years, so it was a gamble they couldn't reject. It must also be said that it's quite likely that MS could make them happy again doing that long awaited price cut this year. Finally, even better offers than BF ones will benefit SW houses a little bit, leaving in the buyers' pockets more money for games.
And whichever the winner, both PS3 and XB360 must be considered winners actually, as with completely different strategies along the year they both beat Wii, that's still the market lifetime leader, but was also once considered unbeatable and destined to disrupt their businesses, sending Sony bankrupt and kicking MS out of the console business.
Edit:
PS: About my last statement, it looks like I was right and Malstrom was wrong.
