I think they'll both make a showing.

The Vita was shown this E3 for the first time - after the 3DS had launched.
I don't think this trend means anything anyway, previously consoles always launched close to one another as thats what they did. It seems likely that the Wii-U will be quite far apart from the other two this time round, and so it's entirely possible they won't mention them at E3. I probably expect Sony / Microsoft to 'mention' the next consoles but they won't show any games, or detail them in anywhere near the detail Nintendo did with say the Wii-U this year, or Microsoft with 'Project Natal'. They won't be playable or anything.
Imo it all comes down to how the Wii-U sells, if its a big hit then Nextbox launches Christmas 2013 and E3 2013 has a huge presense from both Sony and Microsoft. If it isn't such a hit then they wait until 2014. Either way I don't expect much from either this E3, the best we can hope for is some tech demo trailer or a codename for the consoles.
i'll have to agree with ya
same reasons, would be very shocked if they do
theres just a small chance MS could reveal but its a very small chance

Play Me
Just don't see the benefit of either announcing this early unless they plan on releasing this year. I don't see the Wii U exploding because I honestly think the naming will confuse a number people into thinking its a Wii peripheral. Plus I'm not expecting enough of a graphics upgrade to blow people away from the current HD systems.
Plus I really can't see anything being ready to show this early that's not a target render, and those are LIIIIIIIIES. Heck, we haven't even seen one iota of footage from Halo 4 yet. Which leads to point number 3.
Why distract from big releases coming this year (particularly for MS with Halo 4 and all of the big Kinect titles) with something that big that isn't even coming this year?
Granted, each of the companies HAS done this in the past (Nintendo with Wii U, Sony with ... everything and MS with Project Natal), so there IS precedent but I just don't see it.

Well put. But even beyond the historical pattern, people underestimate Nintendo too much. But MS/Sony know the effect of Nintendo on the market and I am sure they are reluctant on giving Nintendo majority of the marketshare yet again another generation just by launching 2-3 years later.
The PS3 and Revolution were revealed at E305, despite games like Twilight Princess, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War II, and Final Fantasy XII still being quite far from release. Hell, the PS3 was announced only two months after the FIRST God of War came out.
Also, Agent is looking like vaporware. If it ever comes out, it probably won't be exclusive any more.
I don`t either of them will be there. There's a small case to be made for the next Xbox being briefly mentioned, but as you say Microsoft and Sony's systems are quite healthy right now and it is too early to cut them off.

Gamecube was a mess thats why nintendo showcased Revolution
PS2 was very very very sucessfull so SONY thought they had time on their hands to easily launch their own system
