Just don't see the benefit of either announcing this early unless they plan on releasing this year. I don't see the Wii U exploding because I honestly think the naming will confuse a number people into thinking its a Wii peripheral. Plus I'm not expecting enough of a graphics upgrade to blow people away from the current HD systems.
Plus I really can't see anything being ready to show this early that's not a target render, and those are LIIIIIIIIES. Heck, we haven't even seen one iota of footage from Halo 4 yet. Which leads to point number 3.
Why distract from big releases coming this year (particularly for MS with Halo 4 and all of the big Kinect titles) with something that big that isn't even coming this year?
Granted, each of the companies HAS done this in the past (Nintendo with Wii U, Sony with ... everything and MS with Project Natal), so there IS precedent but I just don't see it.
