The E3 before Microsoft launched the XBox 360, Sony presented the PS3 for the first time
The E3 before Nintendo launched the 3DS, Sony presented the PS Vita for the first time

I think I'm seeing a pattern here, who wants to fill in the gap

The E3 before Nintendo launches the Wii U, __________________________________?

Regardless of whether you're a die-hard Sony/Microsoft fan and believe the Wii U will "Flop", Sony and Microsoft will display their consoles as an alternative to the Wii U in order to give people reason to wait. If the Wii U does "Flop" they can always delay the release of their console, but if the Wii U is successful they don't want to wait 24 to 36 months to respond.

The Vita was shown this E3 for the first time - after the 3DS had launched.

I don't think this trend means anything anyway, previously consoles always launched close to one another as thats what they did. It seems likely that the Wii-U will be quite far apart from the other two this time round, and so it's entirely possible they won't mention them at E3. I probably expect Sony / Microsoft to 'mention' the next consoles but they won't show any games, or detail them in anywhere near the detail Nintendo did with say the Wii-U this year, or Microsoft with 'Project Natal'. They won't be playable or anything.

Imo it all comes down to how the Wii-U sells, if its a big hit then Nextbox launches Christmas 2013 and E3 2013 has a huge presense from both Sony and Microsoft. If it isn't such a hit then they wait until 2014. Either way I don't expect much from either this E3, the best we can hope for is some tech demo trailer or a codename for the consoles.
