I dont think new console would be good business for either Sony or Microsoft right now. Their consoles just had their biggest year, still lots of support, not any big limitation yet. They are also just starting making good money with those.

I think Sony and Microsoft are going to have their hands forced at this E3. Media is going to be hyping PS4 and XB3 to unbelievable heights, and the WiiU will be all over the place. If they don't they will most likely end up in a position were consumers are uncertaint about the future of the current systems, making them less likely to buy. It is actually better to show off the new systems, and give people a clear vision of the future. Thus they can decide more confidently .
I expect both Sony and MS to acknowledge that they have plans for new systems buy Q4 2013. How much more they show from there I am waiting to see. I also expect them to both announce price cuts to current gen platforms.
360 4GB - $149
Kinect - $99
PS3Slim Re-design - $199
This is the perfect balance IMO.

It is a (very) bad idea to wait for your console to be in trouble before you act to replace it ... from the time it is initially announced until it is released will be 18 to 24 months, from the time a console is released until you want to phase out your current console is (typically) 12 to 24 months, meaning you want a solid 3 years of life in your console from the time you announce its successor; if you wait for your system to be in decline before you act, your console will probably be "dead" before you release the successor which isn't good for the sales of the successor, and the losses from the launch of the console will be in the hundreds of millions or billions of dollars per year.

Yeah, and I believe the PS2 was selling very well, close to its peak numbers, in 2005 when Sony unveiled the PS3.
Well as someone who follows next gen rumors, the next Xbox is all but guaranteed to be shown this year.
PS4 rumors havent been as frequent so its really up to Sony if they want to show a teaser video of its graphics potential or not.
Well I'm still expecting it. But I'm wrong about these things probably more often that Pachter.
So if I say there's 100% chance of Sony announcing PS4 and Pacheter says 0% will that create some sort of paradox that makes the internet implode, because Pachter and I can't both be wrong?
Launching in 2014 (for both MS and Sony) means the opportunity to be even more advanced than Wii U, probably making it that Wii U is "merely" HD whereas PS4 / 360 are super HD (if there is such a thing). That's if Sony and MS are determined to continue to have a discernable performance edge over Nintendo. They might figure that given Wii kicked ass this gen with the much lower spec'd Wii, if there's no spec point of difference over Wii U then the ass kicking might be even worse, given Wii U is launching well ahead.
Anyway, doesn't matter to me, I'll be getting PS4 in about 2016 or 2017 most likely, that'l be when my first born buggers off to university and he can take the clunky ole PS3 with him and I'll replace it with a shiny new PS4...slim.

I still remember a lot of people here in 2007-2008 saying "MS always kills soon their consoles, next box 2010..."

Well at the time, they were half true. Ms at the time did kill there consoles early. Pretty stupid in hindsight because it was only based on 1 console which basically had to die to keep up with the competition.

And to stop losing tons of money on bad deals with nvidia.
Maybe we won´t get to see what the system looks like, but I expect at least some kind of information, even if it´s a vague one.
