Forums - Sony - The Vita's pre-orders are lacking! Is this going to be a problem for Sony?

Haha, I love it. $250 for the 3DS = too high. $280-330 for the PSV (you need a memory card to play some games, inc uncharted) = people will see the value.

As for number 2. PSV has a drought. Sony has allowed it already. Sony needs to step up their game by Dec 2012 to end said drought.

You may not like it, but it's true.  If the 3DS had remained $250 against a $250 Vita, there is no question the Vita would have crushed it.

And drought?  They have 26 games ready for launch, with ~70 more to be ready in the coming months.  How is this a drought?

Haha, sure. No question in your mind.

Quantity of games is not what I am refering to. Take the highest selling vita game that has been announced, throw out a name. Any name, your choice.

That game you just mentioned will be outsold by Nintendogs

That game you just mentioned will be outsold by Mario Kart 7

That game you just mentioned will be outsold by Super mario 3D

That game you just mentioned will be outsold by Smash bros brawl

That game you just mentioned will be outsold by Zelda: OoT

That game you just mentioned will be outsold by Monster Hunter 4

PSV has a very significant game drought - it has a lot of games that will sell moderately. It does not have any big games. It absolutely needs at least 1 game that can compete with the 6 mentioned above for sales by Christmas 2012. The only franchises that I can see pulling this off are; GT, FF, DQ or GTA. DQ seems likely to stay with Nintendo considering the success of the DS version, so that leaves 3 possibilities.

Obviously there was no question in Nintendo's mind, either, as they dropped the price without even trying to compete at the same price.  Lol, so you're definition of game drought has NOTHING to do with the quantity of games?  So Nintendo could push out one of its bigger games once a year, and just because it will sell more than a bunch of Vita games, there would be no drought.  I see there is no use in debating someone like you.

A search for wii game drought on google produces 738k results. The Wii has 1316 games in the VGChartz databse

A search for ps3 game drought produces 80k results. The PS3 has 823 games

A search for xbox 360 game drought produces 524k results, the 360 has 976 games.

It is not simply my claim that drought is unrelated to number of games, it is the claim of the vast majority. We are the 99% - join us, or leave our internet.

One factor might be that the 3DS had only like 8 launch games against 26 for the PSVita.

yep exactly..pretty much all those games have a good following in Japan..I expect good sales for Sf vs Tekken Vita for example, when it launches

and another point would be digital sales for Vita games...Vita with it's PSN integration will give more consideration for digital content than the 3ds. and also Vita is launching with some good 'free' games as well. Namely a new Badman and a AR based tank game

Thanks for stopping by and clarifying some things for us M.u.G.E.N! Glad we have someone who knows all about the Vita here.

you said something about some sort of pre-order limit?

yeah the initial preorder limits at many places were sold out within hours. andriasang and kotaku had some articles running on it.

That was when they initially had pre-orders in October. Even then you could find the 3G version for pre-order. About 3 weeks ago or so they opened up pre-orders for the wifi version again as well. It's not hard to pre-order if you want one.

hence the word 'initial' ..obviously they would add more to it by now. and at the time a lot of major outlets in japan reported sold outs. I remember reading one which was sold out within an hour or so. my point is the demand is there and it's strong ...but the issue is lack of japan centric popular launch titles. But if you compare the launch line ups overall PSV absolutely kills the 3ds line up..I'm frankly not sure what this 'drought' scottie is talking about :S

According to the latest Japan preview article by Jacob Mazel currently on the front page of VGchartz there are no Playstation Vita games at this time with pre-orders over 20,000. He also mentioned, as did a recent thread, that it's launch is a mere two weeks away. What does the number 20,000 mean? Nothing, it is just a number. But the reason I bring it up is because when the 3DS was two weeks away from launching it already had 5 games with over 20,000 pre-orders, again that is coming from Mr. Mazel.

Could this have happened because the PSP is still so popular in Japan right now? This week alone Kamen Rider Climax Heroes Fourza sold around 55,000 copies and we have all seen that it has been strong over there for a while.

I would also like to mention the new Monster hunter game on the 3DS is on that system alone as far as I know. Does that mean Japan will be loyal to the 3DS for now? or is it all just too early to tell?

There are a lot of good things coming to the Vita, so I hope the launch goes well! Any one know the Vita's pre-orders? Seece?

what do you all think about this?

Ahh I though for a moment that you have some actual preorder numbers for Japan ;)

But with biggest launch game being Uncharted which sells 100k on few milions big PS3 userbase in Japan and most of Japan oriented stuff being ports from other platform It wouldn't be suprising to see no games selling above 50k on launch week.

I agree. The biggest launch game for Japan though is the Golf game, not Uncharted.

The only difference I see with the 3DS launch is that 3DS had a bigger launch title with Layton, otherwise the software pre-orders for both are (imo) not dramatically different, especially if you take into account that there are more launch titles. I don't think this in itself says anything about how Vita will do in its launch week.

Currently Playing: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked, Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Anticipating: Xenoblade, The Last Story, Mario Kart 7, Rayman Origins, Zelda SS, Crush3D, Tales of the Abyss 3DS, MGS:Snake Eater 3DS, RE:Revelations, Time Travellers, Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, Luigi's Mansion 2, MH TriG, DQ Monsters, Heroes of Ruin

There are two factors that I see currently as being a "problem".

1) There are more Vita games launching with the system in Japan than any other platform has had. I believe there is 26 titles(?) available for consumers. That makes things very well spread out when you look at the game coming day one. Uncharted, Hot Shots, WipeOut, BlazBlue and Lord of Apocalypse plus many many more.

2) The PSP still is pumping out major titles in the Japanese market. So consumers are having to decide "Do I get Final Fantasy: Type-0 now? Or get a Vita now and hope Type-0 hits the store?". There are still a few major games unreleased for the PSP and consumers are deciding they want these games and don't want to hope they hit the PStore.

These are just my opinions however. Type-0 could be on the Japanese PStore and Japanese gamers just don't care about the Vita.

3DS fixed its problems, except the inevitable redesign. People have discovered the 3DS isn't so bad of a handheld after all.

The Vita is too expensive for a dedicated games device and is lacking IPs that Nintendo exploits like Mario and its numerous spinoffs.
