Forums - Gaming - Microsoft: PS3 price cut hasn’t “slowed” Xbox 360

Sony’s aggressive PS3 price cut this year hasn’t slowed the sales of the Xbox 360, says Microsoft’s Jonathan Grimes – and the company has no plans to reduce the price of their own console anytime soon.

Sony may have brought the price of the PS3 down this year to a point where the Xbox 360 is now on average more expensive than its rival, but Microsoft’s Jonathan Grimes says that hasn’t slowed their platform’s sales, and they don’t intend to be price cutting themselves in the near future.

When asked whether the aggressive nature of Sony’s PS3 price cut had “slowed Xbox”, the newly installed UK Director of Retail Sales and Marketing replied: “No. We are still on the course, and very happy with our value proposition. Who knows what will happen in the next six weeks in the run up to Christmas, but right now I’m pleased. Retail is in a tough place and the macro-economic situation is difficult, but we are confident.”

Asked if this therefore meant no price cut for the 360 was in the offing, Grimes told MCV: “We’re happy with the value in the market at the moment – there are no plans. The value – and I mean not just the price of the box but what’s in it – for a family of four, is good. It really puts in their mind: do they go on their second holiday, or buy a console?”

“In terms of consumer expenditure games are still doing well, it’s seen as a good proposition for family entertainment,” Grimes asserted. “And more and more, as content is becoming broader, we are getting mums and dads playing games like Dance Central and widening out more and more.”

maybe, but if you wanna faster you should price cut

well i already new this. why would MS drop the price knowing regardless they'd still have a block buster holiday season.

Theres alot of "Agressive Pricecut" references, its was $50, that's like a minimum price cut, $100 would of been agressive.

I also wish i lived in his world where its a toss up between a second holiday or a console.

If xbox received a price cut, it'll be much more successful than what it has done to the ps3.

Xbox price cut would have sold more 360's than what the PS3's price cut did for Sony. To be honest Sony should have just left there price at 299. There was no need for them to cut the price.

I dont think a price cut of 17% is a minium price cut.... and it is a hell of a lot more aggressive than no price cut at all.

Given the state of Sony finances I would suggest its a hell of a price cut.

I'm pretty sure nearly everyone believed the $50 price cut would pose a rather passive effect on sales (compared to other cuts) the moment it was announced. Also, percentages usually mean little to consumers compared to the actual quantity of the drop.

Why doesn't he state the truth? Which is that the 360 hasn't slowed down because it has had $50-$100 giftcard promotions since early-mid October to counter the PS3 price drop.

So while he thinks they stood their ground against Sony's "agressive" price cutting, they did so because of their own "agressive" promotional deals.

Let us fight fair boys.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

It didn't slow the 360 down, but it sped the PS3 up.

Not as much as I expected though, I think that will take more of an effect during the holidays and just after, especially when the games start rolling in during Spring.
