reminds me of this...

"Dave, although you took very thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see your lips move"

Sounds interesting but I'm kind of skeptical on the lip reading, unless we're talking another "only works well with English" type thing. The increased bandwidth, etc. and higher resolution though all make sense.

I mean I'd like the lip reading to be true but that seems an awfully tough challenge from the worldwide perspective if you're talking reading lips for multiple languages and dialects.

Sounds a wee bit like the initial over promise/under deliver with Kinect with videos of scanning anything you wanted in and so on.

By the sound of it, I think the lip reading is merely an example to illustrate the precision it will have. It doesn't actually say they will be doing it.

Yeah but lip reading is technically something else.  if they just mean it can resolve lips the shouldn't use the term.  I'm nitpicking on language and context use.  Lip reading means decoding and understanding words from position of lips, not being able to see them.  Assuming they can see them it should be possible I'm just doubtful about many words, languagues, etc. they could easily support at launch.

TBH it would be better example if they're talking about resolution to focus on fingers given the origianl "can it, can't it" debate around Kinect resolving individual fingers.

Ah, that way around. Just to add though, while the unit itself would be unlikely to actually read lips, I don't think it would be that complex to do, to some degree at least, if the data is of high enough precision. If you could simply detect vowels to some degree, it could be used to support voice commands in getting higher precision. Or maybe just put one person in control of who gets to pause a movie, so you avoid trolls on your couch.

Augmented voice commands would make sense.  Full lip reading is pretty tricky as normal people often form fairly varied versions of the same shape to speak.  Most lip reading works best with controlled movements which the average gamer sitting on a couch isn't going to do.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Just as Kinect 1 was rumoured to be able to track fingers?
Why does it need to read lips when it has a microphone anyway?

Kinect can track fingers. And the lip reading is just an example to illustrate its precision, there aren't any rumors about it actually being used for it.

Yes it can in tech demos, but not from the recommended playing distance. And ofcourse it only works as long as you keep your fingers spread facing the camera head on.

But maybe it will be precise enough to use a virtual keyboard while sitting on the couch, that would be impressive.

Leading Rips? Not even I can do that, and I'm pretty damn amazing.

Bundled with the Nextbox? That's even harder to believe.

I am still waiting for the first kinect to do what Microsoft said it would:

-Augmented reality
-Scanning in Items
-Social Networking
-Milo & Kate / AI
-4 Players on screen
-Seating/Standing alternating gameplay
-Transfering items in Voice Chat
-120hrz camera
-Movement that isn't posistion based registration.(ex Dance Central doesn't know you are dancing, it only snaps shots of you at certain positions.)
-FPS using Kinect Only

Where are all these features I saw being advertised at e3?

The things I struck through have been done and the things I set an asterix with I can't remember being advertised or promised in any way. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.

Transferring through voice chat has nothing to do with Kinect, it's simply sending data through the internet, which leaves the AI interaction as the only thing we've been shown, but there hasn't been delivered on.

@ SvennoJ

If it's possible in tech demoes, I'd say it's possible in general. It may not be good enough for gameplay in a 360-game, but can be done none the less.

In the E3 trailer, it shot lazer beams at the kids skateboard, I don't see Kinect shooting lazer beams now, this should be on that list.

There are two little apps you can download from the Kinect Fun Labs where you can scan in your items. Hardly earthshattering usage, but it's been done none the less.

can i get a name to see a video of it or something or a link to a video..I'm VERY skeptical it does anything similar to what they showed during the unveiling

"Build a Buddy" in Kinect Fun Labs. It works really bad, but you can scan in several objects.
