To make the 3DS very desirable. That's why it's selling well in Japan, not only from anticipation, but it's also a replacement for the DS. It's working wonders

Well i ment that the whole DS line is close to the 3DS price. And a DS Lite really isn't desirable anymore, so let's compare only the DSi and 3DS. With them just being $30 from each other, i think most people would gladly pay a little extra to get the 3DS no?
Considering how much is still selling it's not the DSiXL price being too high, it's 3DS being too low. Nintendo is still in damage repair mode since they have screwed up the system launch. I agree with Seece, they should have sold it for 199$.

They could have launched at $199, maybe even should have, but you must remember the atmosphere that surrounded the price drop. Nintendo stock was crumbling after a poor four months of sales for the 3DS, while there was a lot of hype being built for the PSV post E3. Nintendo were justifiably concerned that, if they didn't take strong action to create a substantial userbase ahead of the PSV's launch, the PSV may steal the handheld spotlight and momentum in a Q4 2011 launch and obtain a market leadership position.
On why the original DS models are so expensive? Well I reckon Nintendo don't really care about further penetration of the market with that console, considering it has already sold 150 million units, and, therefore are going for a profit maximisation strategy to offset the small losses incurred on the 3DS sales. The original DS, afterall, must be hilariously cheap to produce at this stage.
