The Golden Compass
The Golden Compass

The whole movie falls apart once he meets other people, and I did not buy that one of the few survivors just happens to have a high-tech virology lab in his basement. The ending sucked too, and pisses on the meaning of the title. Transformers - I'm still not sure why Bay is considered a good action director. He can't shoot for shit. Anyway, Shia was okay and the girl was hot. The Number 23 - The less said, the better. The Bourne Ultimatum - Not my favorite in the series, but easily the best action movie this year. Smart and kinetic - the scene where he guides the reporter through the surveillance and black ops teams at the station is just thrilling. Props for teaching the main character a lesson about himself he probably didn't want to hear. Live Free or Die Hard - Not just a poorly-done movie, but a betrayal of the series. This is exactly the sort of mindless, over-the-top specacle that the original Die Hard was rebelling against. John McClane has gone from Everyman to Superman. |
I absolutely agree with you assessment of Bourne Ultimatum. Easily my favorite action movie this year.

I liked Ratatouille as well, but wouldn't put it on my best of list. Brad Bird is great, but I like Andrew Stanton (Toy Story, Finding Nemo) even more. What you say about 300 is precisely why I don't like it. What if I don't like eye candy? Then all I'm left with is the "not much backing it up." And that's precisely the situation I'm in. |
Believe me, I agree with that 100%. If you don't like the cinematography then there's nothing there. Just a bunch of dudes in diapers. I personally wouldn't even put it in my top 10 movies of 2007. Maybe best LOOKING movies, but that's about it.
I think Andrew Stanton's directing Wall-E. I can't wait for it. It looks like it's going to be really cool.
He is directing Wall-E, yes.

Juno, Once, No country for old men, The Lookout, King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters, There will be blood, 3:10 to Yuma, I'm not there, Assassination of Jesse James, Atonement, American Gangster, Persepolis, Lars and the real girl, Into the Wild, I want someone to eat cheese with, Paprika, Cashback, Eastern Promises, Michael Clayton, The Host, 300, Before the devil knows you're dead, The kite runner, and many, many more.
2007 was an excellent year for movies, once of the best in my memory, I'm quite happy to see that most movies enjoyed the success they deserved. And yes, I'm a huge movie buff.
I would have to say my personal favorite of 2007 was King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters, I would highly recommend everyone see this movie, gamer or otherwise.

300 looked really, really good, and I don't mind the fairly obvious political subtext, but it still didn't resonate with me. Leonidas and his wife felt like the only real characters, with the rest a bunch of generic bad-asses. I didn't feel anything when they died, only when Leonidas died.
There really wasn't much of a plot, just a collection of set-pieces. It really did remind me of a video-games - first you fight the immortals, then a freaky looking obese man, then a rhino...and then you die. Okay, not entirely like most video-games. Obviousy that owes a lot to the source material and isn't really the film-makers' fault, but they could have gotten around it woith strong characters. I thought Dawn of the Dead did fairly well there, so this was a surprise.
Oh well. At least Watchmen will be very pretty.

There are no creatures in the graphic novel that did not exist in reality, and the role of the queen is limited to a few brief words on a single page.

I did, they may as well have just based the movie around Hoffman.
