I am not sure if it costs developers millions of dollars to make hanheld games unless they are Nintendo or another big company, but I am sure that you are right! Vita looks to be struggling and could be a huge blow to Sony. Along with TV sales, 360 staying popular, PS2 fading away and other factors they could be in for a rude awakening! Or do you think they will be fine?

Well, that's one of the biggest problems with the Vita. Its hardware almost demands a level of developmental budget never before seen in handheld gaming. Budgets are going to rise past the point of solvency for how much hardware the platform is going to move. I predict that several developers are going to lose their asses on games for Vita. The only real alternative is making a bunch of ports, which will not bode well for the future of the device. Add in Nintendo and the market intrusion of iOS/Android and there's virtually no way the Vita will become a successful platform for either Sony or developers. It has disaster written all over it in big block lettering.
Nintendo will weather the storm, I'm sure. They offer such solid first party offerings, have such a loyal following, and offer a different enough device where they can keep the platform afloat for one more generation but I don't see handheld gaming sticking around in its current (non convergence) iteration for much longer without huge changes to separate it and make it significantly better than a tablet device. Nintendo is merely going to hold out for longer on the back of Japan and the under 14 demographic, I think.
