Apple isn't dumb enough to release a product that no one wants (ie. 3D devices). It was an okay idea for Nintendo but outside of gaming, 3D is annoying and obtrusive. Still, Nintendo is holding on to a dying market in mobile gaming that is soon going to be overwhelmed by Apple, Google, and others who offer convergence devices that cost little more than a dedicated gaming device but still play a lot of games and play them well.

But as we have seen recently with Nintendo, if you put on games that people want, make the price low and competitive, and cool features people will come and pay for a handheld still. When I think of an Apple product I do not think oh god! I cannot wait to buy some of those free apps or even those 5 dollar games on it. I want it because of the cool factor. Right now the 3DS has that factor. Also if the Vita does well they can thank Nintendo for keeping handhelds alive and giving people a reason to have them. That last line may have been too much!! :P9:

Thank you Nintendo!

The Vita won't do well. It's going to tank so hard that the PSP will look like a booming success in comparison.

Nintendo might get out of this generation with a profitable device but something is going to have to change (and soon) or gaming handhelds are going to dwindle to the point where no developer (outside of first party) will be able to afford to drop millions of dollars on the development of a game that retails for $40. Convergence devices from Apple and Google won't be able to pinch the dedicated gaming market entirely but they'll be able to draw enough from it where no developer will be able to sell enough games to turn a profit on a project advanced enough to take advantage of the dedicated handheld's power capabilities. And if a developer can't sell enough copies of GTA-Whatever on the Vita to warrant the $4m development cost, that handheld is going to be in for a world of hurt.
