So I was recently thinking of ideas that Nintendo could implement to produce a new IP, mainly one that sold well in the West and would be loved by everyone. While I have complete faith that Nintendo EAD or Retro are more then capable of producing a new FPS IP I thought of something that no publisher to my knowledge has done. Created a multi-studio outsourced IP.
I was thinking of Halo Legends and how Microsoft went out to many of the top anime studios in Japan. Microsoft hired each one to create an episode of Halo Legends all based on the Halo property but each one with that developers specific touch, meaning no two episodes were the same. Many fans loved this because Microsoft had pooled all of the best anime talent together to create an animated series based on Halo.
This got me thinking couldn't Nintendo do the same thing with game studios. What if Nintendo contracted say CryTek to creat a new FPS IP for Nintendo. Nintendo hires EA and Dice to make the second title in the series, then if the game is successful hire maybe UbiSoft Montreal to put their talents behind the third installment.
Each installment has a new FPS developer, keeping the series fresh and innovative while sticking to a single story line that Nintendo themselves create. Finally after say 3 or so installments Nintendo takes the series on themselves internally with say Retro bringing the next installment.
I think if Nintendo managed to pool all these great FPS talents together for one new IP it could be amazing. Of course I don't think Nintendo could get Infinity Ward but Nintendo could probably hire quit a few of the worlds best FPS developers and have them bring a unique installment to the series with each game. Also the move would help Nintendo diplomatically they would get relationships started with all the FPS studios and those studios would be more inclined to support Nintendo platforms in the future.
Do you think such a move could work?
