28. Grim Fandango

Grim Fandango was an attempt by Lucas Arts to drag classic adventure games in to the 3D era, but it was a sales failure and was partly responsible for the decline of the genre. That aside, it's a brilliant game that fans of previous adventure games like Monkey Island should love. You play as Manny Calavera, who is a travel agent for the Department of Death, which determines how people progress to the Ninth Underworld (either a 4 year journey on foot for sinners, or a 4 minute journey on a train for worthy souls). Manny discovers a plot to steal peoples train tickets, thus forcing them to set out on foot, and the game follows his attempts to set things right. It really is a great game, and it's just a shame more people didn't play it.

I always wanted to play this game, but when I heard about it retailers stopped selling it . I still have a Windows PC capable of playing it, maybe I should get it. About how long is this game?

A Great game, probably few played. I love Wipeout with a passion until F-Zero GX came out. That game defines high velocity racing, how do that graphics in that game beat almost every single Wii game? I have yet to see any Wii game have objects move that fast, well an HD game too.

F-Zero GX isn't that fast, most of it is purely an optical illusion caused by horizontal stripes on the tracks (and there are lots of them). If you manage to look past this illusion, it's actually quite a slow game. Of course there's also the illusion of speed when the game becomes hard to control. GX's controls aren't top notch, so you get a similar feel as in the extreme-g games. The graphics of the game also work with draw-in, something you can easily spot on Green Plant: Moebius Ring.

The WiiWare game FAST Racing League keeps up with the pace and graphics of GX (in some areas FAST is better, like lighting, water and bump mapping), but it only features eight racers instead of 30 at any given time. Still though, a Gamecube game got matched/outclassed by a downloadable game that wasn't allowed to exceed 43 MB of data.

...

As for my Top 50 games, #29 is Wave Race: Blue Storm (GC) and #28 is Picross DS (DS).

What? Your crazy! I just looked at footage, FAST looks no where nearly as fast as F-Zero GX. F-Fero GX looks like cars going 400km/h in GT5, FAST looks like Mario Kart.

F-Zero GX is fast, I used to have a projector and play this with people on the floor, most people got sick because the speeds were ridiculous.

However yea, a lot of it is added affects. Things like Motion blur make you feel like your going fast, when your not. NFS is notorious for Motion Blur, but FAST is worse. Hit a turbo pad, and you can't see anything, the screen just looks stretched.

I'm sorry F-Zero GX is much faster then any game I have ever seen. If I wasn't so lazy I would embed videos, the difference is huge. How do you even think FAST is, well fast? Looks super slow.

As for your choice. Picross DS is fun as hell. Love that game, beat it so many times, wish there were more puzzles.

#28 Metal gear solid played on Playstation, released 1998

A great game with great variety in gameplay. I love how it literally thinks outside of the box in some of the fights. There are lots of memorable moments in this game. Right from the start you are dropped into an awesome stealth section. It had some great touches like seeing your breath in the cold, and guards picking up on your footsteps in the snow. Every section has something new, you don't have to be afraid of the game becoming repetitive.
The sound was good too, but not as good as in the second one. MGS 2 Sons of liberty stands out for me in the surround sound design of the first stage on the tanker. Surround sound was still relatively new and MGS2 nailed it, it really felt like you were there.
Snake eater and Guns of the patriots are great games too. The first (3d) one was the most innovative though and holds the best memories for me.
Oh and then there are the boss fights, equally awesome in all the games.

From memory it took me a good few sessions to get through it and I usually play for an hour or two at a time. I guess it depends on how quickly you figure out what you're supposed to be doing and how to do it like most adventure games.

#28. Metroid Prime (GC)

"A first person view Metroid.. .that'll never work" I thought. It did work and it was magnificient. The way Retro Studios managed to reproduced the feel of earlier Metroid games but in this totally new perspective still surprises me to this day. You've got backtracking, missiles, different beam weapons, the morph ball, the spider ball, bombs, all the familiar Metroid features made brand new.

The game looks really good and the controls become a second nature within a few minutes of playing the game. The planet you're exploring is huge and the enemies you face are varied and deadly. The music helps you immerse yourself in this world and features new versions of old classics (like the Magmoor Carverns). I don't remember much from the story but that's because all I care about is getting that next power up so I can go back to where I saw a missile expansion that I couldn't get to before.

The best adventure game in my opinion and I have played lots. It got great reviews and why it didn't sell is a mystery to me. Although probably because it was a new IP and quite an original game, both hard sells to gamers unfortunately.

Hopefully this will see a rerelease sometime soon, it is on xbla's most wanted list.

FAST has different speed classes, so you may have not looked at it in top speed. Your comparison with Mario Kart suggests as much.

What's the fastest class then?

Alright, well I might get this game then. My PC is old, so not very many games will work on it (Halo 1 at high spec is the max), but this is one game I have been interested in.

Thanks for reminding me of it, maybe with other peoples lists I can get a few more ideas. Already put FFIX on my list.

Shortcut videos like this one are the only ones showing the fastest class.

That does not look fast at all. The first shortcut he took with boost on looks like regular F-Zero GX gameplay at best, and that's it.

Just look again if you really forgot, maybe the speed of GX fried your brain.

Still for a DLC game FAST looks good. If they wanted to, they could have probably released that as a full game and made decent sales.

#27 Dune 2: battle for Arrakis played on PC, released 1992

The game that laid the foundation for all the RTS games to come. The first Dune game already experimented a bit with RTS at the end of it's excellent adventure. Dune 2 took this element and created the mold for the modern RTS games.

The game itself is very well made with 3 great campaigns to complete. House Artreides, Harkonnen and Ordos fight for control of the spice on planet Dune. Each has their own unique units and special structure. There is only 1 resource to mine, the spice. Be careful while mining, worms may pop up at any time and eat your harvester.

There were no rallying points yet, or grouping units, everything needed to be micro managed. That wasn't a problem since you didn't have very many units to keep track of. The advantage of this was that you really cared about those tanks you just spend so much time to build. No sending of waves as cannon fodder. You needed to carefully take your time to position your different units backing each other up not to loose them to quickly to the enemy defenses.

The game wasn't perfect, the enemy AI became quite predictable after a while. Once you know where they like to attack and focus all your defenses there you are basically invincible (apart from their special attacks). There is of course still the puzzle left how to break down their base before you run out of spice to mine.

There was a remake in 1998, Dune 200. It was still fun to play but other RTS games had advanced much more by then.

I played Dune 2 so much that I decided to build an editor for it. With its graphical interface I could easily alter any of the scenarios and make more challenging maps. Construct deviously difficult enemy bases, put all the spice near the enemy, and give them some advanced units to begin with.
This kept the game fresh for a long time. It was great fun to play with a friend, designing difficult scenarios, then watching the other try to master them.
