Forums - General - Is religion still relevant in modern society?

You please tell me what motivation is there for a person who has adopted the non-theistic world view to have any morals at all?

I like my children, wife, pizza and video games. They help me lead a well balanced and happy life.

Science itself is a disappointment if one is looking for a coherent explanation of the universe and life. It's quite simply not a proper explanation.

I prefer the explanation, "god did it". I find it brings so much closure to questions about life, the universe and why your brain doesn't function. It's relatively short and you don't have to think about anything. Science is hard and you have to spend so much time observing stuff.

Religion was obsolete about 20 years ago. It is still relevant maybe in the mid-west and the South where you tend to have more hillbilly white trash rednecks who also still believe lynching is still an applicable process.

i hate religion, i wish it disappeared, sadly it still is relevant ,VERY relevant specially in my contry. When you have a lot of lawmakers deny women the right to abort on religion basis, you really know religion is still relevant.

well my point is by not having Religion I do not see a better world...

Frankly stop blaming Religion for the worlds problems and look at the real causes you fools...

SO instead of blaming religion itself, blame those who seek to use it to control the masses?  I can handle that.

Totally true on both accounts...but I say it's worth a test. See if taking religion and 'God' out of the equation DOES alter behaviour in the ways I theorize.  again, I'm not as anti-religion as I seem, I just find it a remarkably irrational thing to believe in, and I see it used as a tool to force ideals and opinions entirely too often, sometimes violently.

Worth a test, but how do you think this can be executed? You basically have to tell hundreds of millions that what they believe in is no more in order to see how the few hundredthousands black sheep will react and adjust to the new circumstances. You would just be taking a lot away from a huge amount of people while the people you actually want to target aren't really affected at all.

Kinda like using DRM in video games that only hurts the actual consumers, but not the pirates who quickly find a way around it.

Damn, Rol, not only have you been a calm voice of reason desperately needed in this thread, but you've somehow managed to justify its existence on a video game forum at the same time.

Rol gets +3 Respect and Friended.

Satan? I hear that dude is always up to no good. A Muslim on this very site saw a demon being exorcised from a woman. I vote that we all work together to fight the devil.

yes remember one thing Religion is not some non human thing that is beyond the control of man. Many people even Atheists ignore this fact.

Religion may have spiritual origins, but it has been under the control of man for many thousands of years.

Man is the root of evil, and is using religion in a perverted manner to further some social, culturally or political agenda of some sort (Radical Islam). Religion is a tool used by such men to further their own agendas.

My point being, even in a world without Religion, man will manipulate things to further their own agenda. Today we see it in our Govt, in our businesses and in our civic institutions.
Therefore, we should remember the real enemy is not Jesus Christ Lol, its evil human Beings.

I`m not going to start a religious debate here, but it`s not true that religious people are free as birds to live their faith as they want. You will probably find countries where that happens.

Please, don`t take religious views as they are after you or anyone else. It`s not like that. Try to understand that it`s not personnal, it`s a result of a religious mindset and the defense of values in such mindset.
You spoke of homosexuals and stem cells.
About stem cells, i`ll admit i don`t enough about them to make a statemente, but according to this article (http://catholicism.about.com/od/thechurchintheworld/p/Stem_Cells.htm) the Catholic Church, for example, is not against all stem cell research.
About homosexuality, please, let me make it clear, the Church is NOT against homosexuals. It`s against what it calls a sin - an action or acceptance of a life perpretated by someone. Therefore, as Church defines matrimony or the sacrament of matrimon, as between only man and woman, it natural opposes unions of the same sex.

All of what you wrote above about judging and insulting, you know that that does not speak for religions themselves and should only speak for those who, wrongly, do those actions.

Yes it is. The fact that it classifies homosexuality as a sin proves that.

Then you're more sexist than you think. I also revoke your atheism card. You're excluded from the club. Turn in your gift basket and the cute puppy you recieved.

I guess you can't handle it that not every atheist supports you equally, if at all.

I think other than yourself and padib there weren't any major sexists on this thread. I also don't rarely hear people of any religious persuasion be so sexist, and you know where I live. And I wasn't calling you a 'bad atheist' because of the sexism though (don't see the connection between the two).

Who is this guy? Have we finally seen your true face sapphi, that only those who adhere to your intolerant secularism are part of the atheism club? Rol is leaps and bounds a better person than you in every way he's dealt with me on vgchartz from the day I got here. Actions speak

You are aware that that was a joke, right? There's no such thing as an 'atheism club'. And all I know about Rol is that he's sarcastic and funny. I don't know him well enough to be able to say if he's a 'good person', or not. I also don't consider myself to be a very nice person TBH. What I do know for sure is that sexists are trash.
