Sony Corp profit/loss history:
1996: Profit
1997: Profit
1998: Profit
1999: Profit
2000: Profit
2001: Profit
2002: Profit
2003: Profit
2004: Profit
2005: Profit
2006: Profit
2007: Profit
2008: Profit (record profits)
2009: Loss
2010: Loss
So its actually a relatively recent phenomenon and they had record profits as recently as 2008.
Thankfully, Sony, unlike their "fans", realise that they need to do something different.
They are cutting deep, restructuring and trying a different way. They understand that a lot of their business practices and models no longer work.

I highly doubt any fan would disagree that they need to do something different. However, the last couple years that has nothing to do with the PS3, something this website focusses on. It's mainly their lower LCD TV and laptop sales, coupled with a horrible exchange rate for the dollar and euro against the yen, that is the reason for the losses.

Well , to be honest... yes and no. But this is a thread about Sony financials and the poster said that Sony have been making losses for years, I was just clarifying.
Having said that I think all sony and PS3 fans should be concerned about the parent company struggling.
|
Sony is in no way struggling. Believe it or not but a billion dollars to these companies means far from going bankrupt. They own SO much money.
Sony is already pushing trough hard restructuring in most of their divisions (splitting up the TV division in 3 parts and closing the one that's bleeding money), they bought out Ericcson for 1.4 billion USD (no money??).
Sony has restructured in 2008 and it was for the better (playstation division at the time) I think this restructure will also be good for the company.

Having cash at hand or not is actually largely irrelevant. There is much, much more to it than that.
Are you aware of their debt situation? do you fully understand curreny risk? do you understand why and hpow they are restructuring whole sections of their business? Do you know their profit margin?
I suggest some reading up.

I'm not really tracking everything down but if you are suggesting Sony is anywhere near bankrupty you are deluded.
It's Economy 101 that when a corporation is in trouble you see massive job cuts and not them buying out divisions for billions of dollars. Yes Sony is making losses at the moment and they are clearly doing their best to fix them. In the mean time Sony has alot of amazing products close to release (Vita, Kindle and the new Vaio line) and the losses are already much less significant then they were.
