New Line were holding off with the LOTR's for some reason. It may have been because of the size of the films. Seeing as they wouldn't have fit on a HD-DVD. But should fit nicely on a 50GB disc. Or maybe they were waiting for the 51GB HD-DVD disc to then release them on both formats...but this now looks like it will be BR exclusive.

Or what about the 1.1 profile, allowing most of the playback features HD-DVD had? Have you all forgotten about that?

Man, why are you so angry about this? People that invested in hd-dvd had to know this was going to happen. At best I was resigned to having to get a combo player or hd-dvd myself eventually because I figured both formats would survive. I'm glad it might not come to that now. Just suck it up.

Why do we need to remember the all-important picture-in-picture commentary that soooo many people utilize? I listen to commentary tracks and will use the new 1.1 feature, but that's not a make or break. It is much more important to me that blu-ray discs can not be damaged and have more space available. But hey, whatever, it's here now and with my PS3 I'll get all the updates I'll ever need.

LotR will come eventually, so why are you so upset that people might not realize the reason for New Line delaying its release? Who cares? We know it will come eventually.

If people kept saying something so blatantly stupid around you, wouldn't you get annoyed? And the fact is that Warner actually said at one point that it was the HD-DVD exclusive features that held back films like Batman Begins and The Matrix. HD-DVD neutrality had nothing to do with it.

Well unless you know why LotR has been delayed thus far, then stop attacking people for not knowing the reason you think it is. Who cares as long as it ends up on the format you have?

But even if they don't know that, they DO know that NL has been HD neutral in the first place, so the reason they are assuming is wrong as well.

Ok, man. Everyone is wrong about the reasons for things...good thing those don't really matter.

Right about that, since what really matters is what an HD release would offer that the DVD releases so far haven't. What about those scenes filmed, but not even put in the Extended Editions?

And what scenes would these be?  If there are more I'd love to see them, but as far as I am aware there aren't. :(

PJ went back after the fact and filmed extra scenes for the extended editions on request of the LotR fan club.  These are no Director's Cuts or anything of the sort, as PJ has expressed that he prefers the Theatrical Cuts,  and the EEs were simply fan service that made the moves awkward and lengthy to those who aren't avid fans of the novels.  I don't see why they would leave any other scenes out in this situation.

Didn't you watch the making=of featurettes, or listen to the director's commentaries? He mentions quite a few scenes that were shot, but not finished. He also mentions scenes he would like to do, but I'm talking about the ones he already shot. The featurettes even have little clips of the scenes that were shot, so we know they are there.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

You serious? I usually ignore special features, but I'll definitely have to go check that out.

If they do end up including these scenes, they'll probably release some "Ultimate Extended Editions" or something around the time when the Hobbit comes out.

Man, I hope PJ decides to direct the Hobbit and the sequel. It just wouldn't be as good if he was only the producer. :(

Btw, I hate the quote system here on VGChartz.

Then why would you want it on blu-ray in the first place?

Because it will look freakin' sweet! Imagine seeing every single soldier in the battle of the Dagorlad at the beginning of FotR!

I don't think you quite understand the point of HDM. It's not about the extras. Those are simply extra. It's about the high definition! The awesome clarity, seeing every single detail in movies like LotR. It will be so beautiful...

There's a difference between point and appeal. Of course it's the point, but it does not appeal to everyone. It appeals to you, of course, but for a lot of us, there has to be more. That's why the 75% of HDTV owners say DVD is good enough.

If some anime companies were to retouch old anime to add detail fo HD, I might get into that, since we would have extras that weren't even there in the first place.

BTW, seeing all the soldiers in Lord of the Rings may not be a good thing, and may even be counterproductive to the purpose of the MASSIVE program, which makes you think there are more autonomous units on a battlefield than there actually are. You might see clumps moving as one, which would destroy the carefully crafted effects.

Then again, it could be compensating for that very thing that the release is taking so long.

It could be one of the MAJOR reasons we don't have a flood of releases. Seeing a film's CGI suffer, the way Babylon 5 did on DVD, would completely ruin the purpose of HD films.

While I didn't watch too many LotR extras, I do seem to recall watching one where they discussed the program they used to simulate massive armies in LotR, and it involved groups of units moving together in battalions of sorts, but each individual soldier moving with it's own distinct style and animations. Each soldier was unique. Because of this, i wouoldn't be too worried about something like that.

Actually, I specifically remember this scene because I thought it would be so cool if Ensemble Studios of Chris Taylor adopted the engine for use in an RTS, lol.

Anways, the films were filmed from 1999-2003, and the first commercial HDTVs went on sale in 1998, so I think they should be covered for HD. Anything released from 2000 on should probably be fine, imo.
