It could be one of the MAJOR reasons we don't have a flood of releases. Seeing a film's CGI suffer, the way Babylon 5 did on DVD, would completely ruin the purpose of HD films.

While I didn't watch too many LotR extras, I do seem to recall watching one where they discussed the program they used to simulate massive armies in LotR, and it involved groups of units moving together in battalions of sorts, but each individual soldier moving with it's own distinct style and animations. Each soldier was unique. Because of this, i wouoldn't be too worried about something like that.

Actually, I specifically remember this scene because I thought it would be so cool if Ensemble Studios of Chris Taylor adopted the engine for use in an RTS, lol.

Anways, the films were filmed from 1999-2003, and the first commercial HDTVs went on sale in 1998, so I think they should be covered for HD. Anything released from 2000 on should probably be fine, imo.
