Yep , it seams that HD-DVD owners will never see high-def orcs or goblins ... why , because New Line had decided to go Blu-ray exclusive , just like its owner , Warner . This wasnt unexpected , but still , its a great news . It seams that the HD war could be over in matter of months .

Oh, no! Please say it isn't true??? HD-DVD owners will never be allowed to buy a Blu-ray player??

Maybe I'm missing something, but how does New Line releasing Blu-Ray titles mean HD-DVD owners will never be allowed to buy a blu-ray player?

He cant read the bolded part ... thats all ...

No, I can read the bolded part.  It says HD-DVD owners will never see high-def orcs or goblins, which is rediculous because there isn't any law that says HD-DVD owners can't also be Blu-ray owners.

I understood the implication was that the Lord of the Rings movies would never be on HD-DVD, but I responded this way because the statement in question was just a cheap shot.  There wasn't any reason to rub the fact that New-Line was going Blu-ray-only into the faces of those who have invested in HD-DVD.  Yes, HD-DVD appears to be on it's way out.  Yes, Blu-ray appears to be winning not only in sales month-after-month, but in studio support as well.  I certainly hope you never own a technology that gets orphaned... someone might rub that in your face. :-/

As much as I hate to use Amazon.com as a reference...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/dvd/ref=pd_ts_c_th_more?&pf_rd_p=344050601&pf_rd_s=right-4&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=130&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=16CGZEB7CCM2BDGW552M

Check eproductwars.com/dvd

Amazon is currently having a big sale on BR. A few days ago it was HD DVD that had all the Harry Potters as #1, 2, 3, 4, etc.

Look at the top selling DVD (including HD DVD and BR) players:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/electronics/1036922/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_e_1_3_last

#1 and #2 are HD DVD players, #3 is a DVD player and #4 is BR

That's because there was a sale on HD DVDs that week.

Amazon sales then to heavily lean towards HD DVD for some reason. There have been almost entire weeks with HD DVD in the lead on Amazon, but when the Nielsens finally come out the next Friday, it turns out that Blu-Ray lead the week by 60% or more.

New Line was never holding back on LotR. It's just a really big release that they're putting a lot of time and effort into. They've been working on them for a while, and they were first announced at last years CES (source HD Insider), though no real details were given.

There have been strong rumors that they will be officially announced at this CES (woot, just a couple of days away!), with concrete information like a release date and other small details.

Go Blu-Ray, it's your birthday!

Wonder how long this story will be on before Sony is accused of paying New Line off as well...

all this talk has made me crave a blu-ray movie. I think I will choose "Live Free or Die Hard" (I got the Die Hard 4 pack for x-mas.. yay)
Also might go good with a glass of lemonade and some popcorn.
mmm. yes goodbye

Also, the concern for me, and for most hd adopters is not whether or not hd discs will be accepted in general (over dvd or VOD), but whether they (blu-ray discs) will have all the support and continued releases throughout history.
and pounding hd-dvd in the face with these new announcements almost guarantees that.

Pounding HD-DVD format in the face with the new announcements, while a very aggressive way to look at it, is fine. Let's just try not to pound the HD-DVD owners in the face in the process...

A PS3 supporter telling someone "they should have known what they were getting into when things went bad"? Now if that isn't irony I don't know what is.

Seriously though:

This is good news for Blu-Ray however I can only wonder how much Blu-Ray's emerging dominance will help adoption of the HD market in households much ales help Sony's financial situation or for that matter help the PS3 as a gaming console. Only time will tell. I just want to caution people against assuming Blu-Ray beating HD-DVD garantees an acceptance of HD formats or any real success for the PS3.

To bad that Nintendo never made a bad move ... wait , they did ... was it called Gamecube ?

New Line were holding off with the LOTR's for some reason. It may have been because of the size of the films. Seeing as they wouldn't have fit on a HD-DVD. But should fit nicely on a 50GB disc. Or maybe they were waiting for the 51GB HD-DVD disc to then release them on both formats...but this now looks like it will be BR exclusive.

Or what about the 1.1 profile, allowing most of the playback features HD-DVD had? Have you all forgotten about that?

Man, why are you so angry about this? People that invested in hd-dvd had to know this was going to happen. At best I was resigned to having to get a combo player or hd-dvd myself eventually because I figured both formats would survive. I'm glad it might not come to that now. Just suck it up.

Why do we need to remember the all-important picture-in-picture commentary that soooo many people utilize? I listen to commentary tracks and will use the new 1.1 feature, but that's not a make or break. It is much more important to me that blu-ray discs can not be damaged and have more space available. But hey, whatever, it's here now and with my PS3 I'll get all the updates I'll ever need.

LotR will come eventually, so why are you so upset that people might not realize the reason for New Line delaying its release? Who cares? We know it will come eventually.

If people kept saying something so blatantly stupid around you, wouldn't you get annoyed? And the fact is that Warner actually said at one point that it was the HD-DVD exclusive features that held back films like Batman Begins and The Matrix. HD-DVD neutrality had nothing to do with it.

Well unless you know why LotR has been delayed thus far, then stop attacking people for not knowing the reason you think it is. Who cares as long as it ends up on the format you have?

But even if they don't know that, they DO know that NL has been HD neutral in the first place, so the reason they are assuming is wrong as well.

Ok, man.  Everyone is wrong about the reasons for things...good thing those don't really matter.

No, it was called the Virtual Boy and the N64 using carts. The Gamecube was just a casualty of the latter. You don't even know basic gaming history?

Right about that, since what really matters is what an HD release would offer that the DVD releases so far haven't. What about those scenes filmed, but not even put in the Extended Editions?
