Forums - Sales Discussion - Xbox 360 Vs. Playstation 3 2012 - *February* Update

Kinect isn't a console, it's viewed as by casuals and sells like one, and will this xmas, whether you like it or not. Industry folk agree and everyone else does expect Sony fans, funnily enough.

The problem with Kinect selling like a console, comes the fact that a console doesn't sell without new, compelling games. Look at the Wii. No games and it drops, good games and it does well.

What does Kinect have this Holiday to push it to new consumers?

Another thing to look at with Kinect is, is it the only new "in" thing on the market this Year? Last Year it had Move to contend with, and let's be honest, in comparison to Kinect... Move sold like shit. The Wii was the usual "go to" console for the expanded market even in 2010, but it had a fair few big games release (JD2, DKCR, Epic Mickey, Kirby, Sonic, GoldenEye). In 2011, Kinect has a much, much, MUCH bigger contender in the ring - The 3DS.

3DS will take Kinect's place as being the "in" thing this Year among the expanded market. It's the successor to the best selling handheld ever. It's at a new, great price and has 2 huge games releasing in America (Likely to be Kinects only huge market). Mario 3D and Mario Kart are going to be fairly big. Mario 3D will surpass 5 Million and Mario Kart, as we all know, can surpass 20 Million.

Without a pricecut, Kinect probably wont do anywhere near as well as last Holiday. Same goes for 360 itself. It's not a "Sony fans" thing, it's just looking at it from an angle other than the one Microsoft want us to see.

Seece, you really must stop with this Kinect is a console and sells like a console. If that were true, then its doing absolutely HORRIBLE. The Wii, which most people see as performing rather poorly, did more than double Kinect's WW numbers in America alone last week. No, it's just seen as an add-on and its selling like one, which is why its pulling numbers slightly below Wii Fit, and probably slightly above Move.

This holiday isn't going to change that. Sure, its going to see a really nice boost in Americas and the UK (the other two are going to too, though probably not as large), but not numbers like what happened last year when its was crazy hyped and a brand new product. What game for it do you think is going to push that much Kinect HW? The only one that I see that would have been a significant booster was Stat Wars Kinect, and that was delayed til next year.

I'm going by the last shipment figures.

The last Q we got was 2.4M which was more than the PS3 and the Wii.

360 and PS3 in its early life did 0.7M in some Q's.

Kinect isn't a console, it's viewed as by casuals and sells like one, and will this xmas, whether you like it or not. Industry folk agree and everyone else does expect Sony fans, funnily enough.

And Kinect is an add-on that was sold to an already established userbase in addition to casuals who dropped money for the 360+Kinect.  You can't compare that to 2 new systems (360 and PS3) that cost $299 and $499 respectively.  Plus, the last Q we got was Jan-March of this year, still hot on the heels of the Kinect hype and holiday success.  However, the previous Q (April-June) MS remained silent about Kinect sales, most likely because it was below expectations and not worth bragging about.  And as Carl pointed out, Kinect is going to have some competition as the "it" product, the 3DS.  And with 2 new Mario games and its low price, the 3DS is going to be tough to beat.

And this isn't a Sony vs MS thing, or a Nintendo vs MS thing, so let's not label the coversation from the opposing side as that.  Especially when even some MS fans have stated their doubts about them being able to pull it off.

Instead of contributing to the topic, lets all start attacking the OP....

The multi-platform FPS on the 360 appear to be out-selling the PS3 versions by 20-30% total, so it's hard to see how this could significantly boost hardware sales for the 360 over and above the PS3, and there's just as many big titles just released and coming soon for both, so I think the 360 will have a hard time closing the 1 mill gap.

We're at 15 pages and we don't even have the first weekly line of the table filled in!

Patience people, let's wait for at least some data.

Should be interesting - like a holiday sales advent calendar.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Sony fans to buy Kinect. now that is funny. i'd buy the Nyko version though. its said to be better and has a longer range of detection then Kinect. i think its called the zoom?

i'm just watching. Seece does have a point and its not i'm possible. its a 2 sided coin people. either he's right or wrong but its possible.

srry dud but thats an oxymoron. Wii origionaly sold well and over PS360 without games even over the summer. the only reason Wii isn't selling is becuase of Wiiu, and ninty saw how bad it did last yr, but games is definately another factor!

but not as much as ninty abandonning the Wii for most of its life and most notably now.
