Actually, Gears of War deserves no credit. kill.switch does.

OT: This is very, very disappointing from Sony, even though I like Uncharted.

Hmm..I think what they said was that Sony encouraged using realistic approach instead of fantasy like how they encouraged using Move for uncharted 3, but Naughty Dog refused.

Well...honestly that's not what inferred from reading through it. Sounded to me more like it was meant to be even more fantasy like until Sony ordered a push for a more realistic style.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

there is nothing wrong with taking elements or influence from other games... there is certainly no need to go all fanboy and defensive about it.

Quite clearly Uncharted has taken influences from Gears.

Just like Forza has taken influence from GT.

Great post.

yep and does it matter ? Sony got into the business after a tiff with nintendo, MS saw what Sony did with consoles and wanted in, people always want a piece of the action.

pressure from xbox shooters? like which shooters exactly...

Obviously Gears of War.

And I always new there was something special about Uncharted

The only trouble with that is the 12 month time difference between launches obviously the direction was altered long before then in regards to art direction whether  the cover system was adopted after gears release and success is also debatable as setting up the cover and system would have to been done fairly early has the levels are designed around giving you that cover.

The direction from Sony was most probably a general one, more specific would be it getting insiomniac to make resistance for them.

obviously Uncharted got influenced by many games, probably including that one.

but how much footage was actually shown, and how much stuff did we actually know about Gears, while Uncharted was first getting conceptionalized.

Uncharted came out, like one year after Gears 1, with 2 year dev time, i doubt i was as influenced by Gears as it was by Halo.

plus it seemed like they were talking more art style/ aesthetics than gameplay mechanics (which are likely nearly impossible to change after some dev time).

but if someone were to say uncharted wasnt influenced by those game, is ridiculous. all games are influenced by the competiton

Actually, if you talk about Uncharted and its mechanics, as well as Gears...Headhunter on the Dreamcast should get the credit for starting everything in terms of cover mechanics.

Even to this day Headhunter stands out as feeling modern. Sandbox + stealth + cover system.

How could I have missed this? Thanks for bringing it up, I stand corrected.

Headhunter on Dreamcast must be a lot better than that shitty PS2 version I bought.

sad to hear. PS is not the shooter box and Sony fail'd to understand that. to many shooters on the market as it is.

I think PS3 is more of a shooter box than xbox. Just look at all the exclusives that have come out and that are coming out for ps3 that are shooters. Plus on top of that ps3 gets every multiplatform shooter as well. If you wanted to play shooters and Halo isn't something that intrigues you too much, I'd say PS3 has got you covered.

if you say so buddy

Everyone know what this actually sums up to be?

Healthy competition. This is why I want Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft to survive together. They all push each other.

No need for so much hate. All sides have great games we all love. Whether we own all 3 or just choose to have 1.

headhunter was a great game, but to be fair winback on N64 had the cover system before it

Depends...did you buy headhunter redemption? If so, then yeah, DC(and PS2 port) version is much much better...

Amazing Headhunter game

6/10 average action headhunter game

Winback was pretty good but looking at it now, all it had going for it was the cover mechanic. N64 also held it back with its subtitles and lack of voice work/cgi. But yes, that is where we first saw cover mechanics. Exciting times...
