I am waiting for the XL version to use at home.
has anyone thought about how they will fit in the two extra shoulder buttons without it being fatter or with things sticking out?

I said no, because the 2nd circle pad is optional in all games announced, they will have an option of good controls even without it.
So, until it will become a standard for everygame or almost, i don't see why even thinking to it.

you're asking too much of us.

Probably by paying engineers lots of money to think about it :P
Anyway, a few solutions spring to mind, none are ideal.
1) Don't have 4 - I can't think of many games on home consoles that require 4 trigger buttons, and even if they do, you can use modifiers (ie hold A plus right trigger = R2)
2) Smaller triggers laid out as they are on the PS3 controller - they don't even need to be the size of a finger, as long as you can pull the trigger with part of a finger
3) Normal size triggers, laid out at the xs

exactly, they could do it just like the original classic controller if they wanted to, but it seems like overkill to me. The 3DS is still a handheld no matter how much people want to treat it like a home console. With the way Nintendo work , they might not even release a version with two analogs.

After thinking about it for a while, that's actually my main beef with the platform. I would love to play most of its games, but on a bigger screen.
If they ever release an XL version, then I might consider getting one, but I'm not sure increasing the size of a parallax screen is that simple without also changing the sweet spot, or increasing the resolution.
Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

mini-games on consoles, cinematic games on handhelds, what's next? GameBoy IMAX?

I was already trying to wait for a better battery, now there is going to be one with extra buttons and circle pad, youd have to be crazy to buy one and not wait, i can imagine some people breaking when mario games are out, but right now there is no appeal at all knowing that a redesign is inevitable.
Plus you must be crazy if you dont think there will be a redesign 3ds, even if the circle pad add on fails and they dont release a new one with that add on built in there will still be a redesign, there were 4 DS's, you think Nintendo will only make 1 3DS.
Regardless of addon there will be a redesign to address battery life, and to stop the top screen scratching itself.
