^^^Selnor has got me super hyped!

Somebody should make a spoiler thread so that guys who've beaten the game can discuss the story. Not yet, though. I'd be too tempted to read something!

Selnor is right - Acts 1 & 2 are good, acts 3 - 5 are pretty freaking amazing.

I'm excited now. I played through the first act and very beginning of Act 2 with my friend the other night, and we both think this campaign is insane compared to the first two games. I think we've died like 10 times or so, each one a different way by a different enemy. The story hasn't gone anywhere yet, but that's pretty unimportant when the gameplay is as awesome as it is here.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

What difficulty are you playing on?

I tried to play INSANE yesterday with some friends (they were playing hardcore, I was playing Insane), and man, it was crazy, insane, HARD!  No, DBNO, straight to death.  Yikes.

Hardcore right now. I've been really getting abused. I got picked up and ripped and half by one of the lambent, slow roasted by the one whose tentacle arm can survive and squirm on the ground, and blasted into pieces with a one shot while trying to revive my friend. I don't remember dying this much in Gears 2, but most of my deaths so far have been hilarious, and I can't wait to see what ways I can die tonight.

I've only played a little bit of campaign so I can't say too much about that yet. Horde is where it's been for me and it is great. It seems a lot more hectic, but in a good way. Boss battles are off the hook too. As others have mentioned, the controls feel so much better to me, I think "fluid" is the right way to describe it. In fact they feel so good that I'm gonna try my hand at some deathmatch tonight. I'm sure I'll get owned but as long as it's not frustrating with the controls, I don't care.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

Wow, why was epic being so modest about the 3d? Gears in 3d is suprisingly good. There is a resolution hit but the level of depth on max settings is impressive. If epic managed to throw this in last minute then I'd love to see what they can do if they build 3d from the ground up. Now I'm even more excited to see arkham asylum in 3d since its also using unreal engine 3d tech.

Digital Foundry vs. Gears of War 3

The smart money says we're nine months away from the reveal of brand-new Xbox hardware, that major advances in visual technology are being held back by the hardware limitations of six-year-old architecture. Gears of War 3 begs to differ. Developed in parallel with the hugely popular Unreal Engine 3 technology, the game looks absolutely remarkable: put it side-by-side with the last game, or even up against Epic's own Bulletstorm, and it's clear that the current gen is still capable of some genuine surprises.

Things are different in the new game: the team has utilised the Unreal Lightmass global illumination tech to excellent effect: light and shadow now have real depth and volume and work in combination with UE3 real-time effects such as the god-rays/sun-shafts we saw in the Xbox 360 and PC versions of Bulletstorm released earlier this year.

Another notable inclusion in the VFX toolbox is the excellent implementation of atmospheric rendering, giving a real sense of scale and ambience to a variety of levels. Alpha and particle effects in general are quite remarkable - a real improvement over what we've seen before in previous Unreal Engine games, and reminiscent at times of the gritty atmosphere evoked by Killzone 3 and Resistance 3. The fact that Unreal Engine 3 throw so many transparencies about while maintaining its performance level to the extent that it does is another feather in the cap of the Epic engineers.

In addition to all the visual eye candy we enjoyed in the game, the tech team also deserves kudos for the elements you don't notice. A case in point is the texture streaming system: it's long been a thorn in UE3's side - artwork appearing from nowhere during the Mass Effect era, resolved to a certain extent in Gears 2 with a new system whereby mip-maps are blended to make the arrival on-screen of new assets less noticeable. In the latest game, you'll be hard-pressed to find any kind of issue with this at all in-game, greatly enhancing the visual consistency of the game. In fact, the only really noticeable LOD popping we can recall seeing during the entire campaign occurred occasionally during the engine-driven cut-scenes.

It's safe to say that Gears of War 3 is one of the most advanced video games of this generation, and a ringing endorsement of what the Xbox 360 is capable of handling when the right people, the right tech, a lengthy development cycle and an inordinately large budget are in play. From a technological perspective, with just a few caveats that we've touched upon, the overall presentation is first class. However, there is a clear area where Epic has had issues in improving upon past performance: the video-driven cinematics.

In conclusion, it's safe to say that Gears of War 3 is an enormous success on many levels. At its most fundamental level, it takes the existing gameplay formula and refines it into an experience that just feels great: you're never at odds with the controls, the action is fluid and intuitive, and there's an immense level of satisfaction in all aspects of the core mechanics. This might not sound like a big deal, but in reality it's the end product of a huge amount of work at the Epic studios.

On top of this, the new Gears is clearly the most technologically advanced Unreal Engine 3 game to date, pushing the technology in exciting new directions. As our videos have hopefully demonstrated, the lighting and VFX work is nothing short of phenomenal, while the new camera and object-based motion blur systems are the most refined we've seen from any game utilising the Epic tech: this is a 30FPS game but, similar to The Force Unleashed II, it looks and feels smoother. On top of this, the art direction is simply superb - the quality is so much improved over the previous Gears titles that a return visit serves to remind you of how much progress Epic has made over the course of this console generation.

In-depth analysis is a good 3 page read.

Playing over at friends house and damn does it look good

Somewhere between act 1-1 and the final part of act 3, this game has hooked me like no other. I just finished act 3 and I am blown away. The graphics have taken a turn for the insane! I'm not a big fan of Ice-T's voice work, though. I just keep seeing Ice-T instead of the character he voices. Terrible choice, casting him. I also wish that I didn't read or watch any reviews of the game. I made it so close to the game's launch by avoiding all media on Gears 3, only to blow it by watching a ton of video reviews at the end. They were vague but with the tidbits of info and enough time to think, I pretty much knew what was going to happen and when.

Still, that doesn't detract from the fact that Gears 3 is everything I could have hoped it would be. Kicking off stage 4, I think it's a 9.5/10!

Had an amazing weekend with Gears 3.

2 x 42'' TV's + 2 x X360 + 2 x GeoW3 copies + 5 friends and a ton of booze/ganja made for one hell of a weekend.

We started playing Friday @6pm and finished 10pm on Saturday (in Hardcore mode obviously). 4 Player co-op via system link ftw.

A technical marvel with tons and tons of depth.

EPIC, I salute you.

Really? I thought he was pretty good in the role. At first I was like "hey, Ice T!", but then all I was thinking about was the story again. I always do that in other games as well, like in Mass Effect when I heard joker I immediately though "hey, Seth Green!", but then I just start thinking about the story again. I thought he was a good choice for the character.

I just finished Act 4 and I'm about to start Act 5. Act 3 was epic though!

Enjoying it a lot so far. Most polished Gears yet, and even better, the characters in SP are actually palatable this time around.

I've always enjoyed the gameplay but hated the main characters (in Gears 1 and 2 Marcus and the gang really, really grate on my nerves with their dialogue and terrible voices) but this time around the Dudebro seems to have been dialed back to sensible levels.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
