To be fair, that's because Sony has a clear priority in keeping all their top talent working on the PS3, and setting PSP/Vita development for lower tier teams. A strategy that packs the console lineup with goodness, but means that the handheld never gets anything truly excellent internally |
what a load of bull!
I mean really,. this is so deja vu! Maxwell made a similar ignorant comment a while back...it was worse tho..he couldn't think of more than one first party that made a psp game >_>
you are, to put it bluntly, wrong.
Let's consider which First party studios of Sony have made games for their handhelds so far shall we
SCE Japan...check
Polypony Digital...the guys who makes their highest selling franchise...doesn't get more 'top tier' than that...check
SCE San Diego...check
Sony Bend...check
Zipper...check
SCE London..check
SCE Cambridge...check
SCE Stuido Liverpool...check
BigBig Studios..check
Guerilla games..makers behind their flagship FPS....check
Both media molecure and santa monica have had taken part in developing games for psp as well
the only one missing so far is Naughty Dog
so yeah what you just said is just full of it, no offense. and do tell, have you played games made by Bend for the psp? if you have I do not think you would have any doubt that they 'are' some of the best talent Sony has....they are just brilliant! All the Syphon Filters and Resistance game they made for the psp were top quality, some of the best games on any handheld, period.
I mean really...never gets anything truly excellent internally? >_> nvm I think this just topped the maxwell comment. Don't confuse the inadequacy of nintendo and their abaondonment of the Wii system with anything else. Sony have given some top quality games on both home consoles and handheld, give props where it's due, such damage control statements are unsightly

Same studio doesn't mean same team or same quality each time for that matter >_>
This is exactly what padib was talking about, they put their top tier IPs on their handheld but when you really look at the actual quality of what's being put out, it pales in comparison to the efforts being made on their home console
PSP support may be "brilliant" and "top quality" according to you, but you're lying to yourself if you think it's at the same level as PS3 developement
Wii has holes thanks to 3DS in Japan and Europe, yeah, but in America, the holes are thanks to Nintendo of America.

I don't see anything wrong with Mr Khan's statement, he just told it how it is and you are getting overly defensive. If the PSP really got "truly excellent" first party games, then there would be visible hype for these titles on message boards (unless Sony fans in general despise the PSP, but that's not the case). The sales aren't there either and not even the critical receptions support the notion that Sony's PSP games are truly excellent. Polyphony's Gran Turismo game for the PSP is basically the biggest proof for Mr Khan's statement. That game really wasn't something that you would expect from top talent, but rather something that a small team inside the company was put to work on while all the actual talent kept working on Gran Turismo 5. Additionally, isn't it true that pretty much all IPs on the PSP feel like lesser versions of their home console brothers? That would explain the lack of hype, sales and similar critical praise. |
lol maaan I typed you a nice detailed reply but then a stupid ass power outage happened..and woosh :D
anywho let me summarize again..
when I first joined VGC, I noticed we don't have many big psp fans here, most of those who were here were so for the RPGs mainly. But that doesn't mean that's the story across the internet. and surely you realize how silly your statement of if they are true quality there would be more hype is right? that really doesn't mean anything. But now you can see many people excited for games like Uncharted GA or Wipeout 2048 or even LBP Vita. we had plenty of discussions over them, about their new features, gameplay mechanics, graphics etc etc even on VGC.
and your last statement, no offense is filled with ignorance and generalization. so I won't bother going into a list war here on the subject. But I'll tell you this much, when devs were trying to replicate a well established IP on the home consoles on the handheld, the thing that held them back was the hardware limitations. And I'm not just referring to the second nub, tho it was a big part too. The psp lacked different control input than the ps3 and this is exactly something the psv has addressed. we can see the results clearly now, even the known IPs like Uncharted are showing some unique gameplay mechanics on the system that were not possible before. same with wipeout. same with LBP Vita. and the list goes on.
your example of GT PSP has some merit BUT they did a good job in replicating that huge game on the handheld, given how much GT5 had content wise it was obvious that they will have to cut content, which they did. I think some of their choices were questionable personally BUT the quality is there for sure. You see I honestly don't think many of the people who spread this fud have actually played these games. For example not considering Sony Bend to be top tier talent in Sony is an insult to the studio. the syphon filter games as well as their Resistance game have been some of the best of their respective series! will they be able to do it again with Uncharted? I won't bet against that at all.
let's not get into critical praise bit...that's a whole different topic and honestly critics are in general, idiots when it comes to reviewing handheld games. don't want to get into it cuz it's simply too much typing lol
but you know, pretty sure games like syphon filter, chains of olympus, Retribution, Wipeout got good critical praise...right? :S
all in all not being defensive at all, just pointing out a common misconception spread mainly by ninty fans in these forums, who in general lack knowledge of the games they criticize in the first place..it's amusing and annoying at the same time. Khan can't be more wrong. many of sonys first party have made games for the handheld. many have have made truly excellent portable experiences. these are facts. most of those who say otherwise haven't even played those games which is kind of a sad notion in itself. and if you are gonna contradict me, please give me reasons why..why is syphon filter not top quality? Why Wipeout pulse/pure not top quality? Why Resistance Retribution not top quality? then we can have a decent debate
and I do apologize if I came of 'angry' lol it's just how I type usually, you guys should be used to it by now ffs! :P wasn't angry at all...a tad annoyed? definitely.but not angry

It's quite a simple argument. When Nintendo want to make a Mario game, it's usually the same team behind it whether it's on their home console or on their handheld. When Sony come to make a new game in one of their franchises, the team that have been with the IP from the start makes the home console game, but then sometimes another team makes the handheld game. Uncharted, God of War and Resistance are just three examples off the top of my head where it has happened.
It doesn't matter that the studio making them are possibly just as good as the original team and that they can do a great job of making the games, it gives the impression that the games are being farmed out and that the main team can't be bothered with handheld development. Even someone who has just discovered internet forums should know that impression is often given more importance than reality when making an argument. The PS3 has no games. The Wii is two GC's taped together. The 360 will set fire to your house. There's three statements that should be familiar to us all where the impression is more important than the reality.
I've seen and heard diehard Sony fans make this very same argument multiple times in the past, to suggest it's limited to 'ninty' fans is ridiculous...

You can hardly call what you said "the facts" when it's almost entirely based on subjectivity. That's why I was talking about the perception among Sony's fanbase, the sales and critical reception compared to the PS3 and its games. There certainly aren't many first party party studios who have made truly excellent games for the PSP. But I'll concede that WipEout Pure/Pulse and the Sony Bend games are close enough to the kind of quality we are talking about and add LocoRoco while I am at it. Still though, the fact remains that there is a notable gap in commitment within Sony when it comes to home console and handheld support which was the original point that was being made. Granted, the reality isn't as drastic as originally portrayed ("no truly excellent games at all"). Regarding the Vita games, we'll have to wait and see how they turn out. Originally, the PSP games also had more hype, but that faded over the years, because more often than not they failed to live up to the expectations. Uncharted is certainly the safest bet right now, because the studio behind it has the best track record. |
Let's just agree to disagree on the first point. Cuz as you say it really is subjective and I respectfully disagree with your opinion.
but I'm glad you agree on the titles you mentioned (also let's not forget Patapon!) I think the problem with sony and psp came about around 2008 (and this is a year that I'm trying to remember from the top of my head now so I might be wrong here on the time frame)..I think they started pushing many of their devs towards ps3 development alone (most probably to capitalize on the upcoming price cut of 2009) and they did somewhat abandon the system, I was a pretty pissed off psp fan at the time. they and 3rd parties did good tho later on, but that period did some heavy damage to the image of the system. Hopefully they won't repeat the same mistake with PSV
about the PSV games, not just Uncharted GA, even games like Gravity Daze, Wipeout 2048, LBP Vita are looking great! I am especially a big fan of Gravity Daze at the moment and I pray it turns out as good as it seems. time will tell if they would live up to their potential tho, and I really hope they do :D
