That movie is not relevant to the likes of Alice which dance around the $200M budget. I don't think Disney cares that much to call it a misstep.

But it was though.

Explain to me how that movie lost Disney even close to how much Alice will.

I never said it would.

The thing is Disney sent that movie to die and chose to focus their marketing efforts on other projects. That's why when it came out nobody knew about it.

All studios do stuff like this every year, whenever they believe focusing on another movie will make up for the losses the initial movie will create.

Alice Through the Looking Glass is not one of those movies, it had a huge marketing push that probably goes beyond $150M and the movie budget itself that is reportedly $170M. All for a movie that should not have even happened.

Alice Through the Looking Glass is Disney's first misstep in an incredible year for them so far. Very curious to see where they will end up, updated poll.

Did you forget about The Finest Hours?

Even if Through the Looking Glass will end up having no legs it will still easily make more money then is production budget which  The Finest Hours didn't do.

I am actually surprised Alice did so poorly. People seemed to enjoy the first one somehow, maybe over time they came to their senses.

It would be nice if people would come to their senses and the next Tranformers and Pirates of the Caribbean both would bomb.  But with all the product placements within the Tranformer movie it would have to bomb extremly hard to actually loose money.

Well the first one made so much money that they couldn't resist making another one.

I think The Jungle Book will pass 1 billion when it gets released in Japan next month.

It only needs another $65,272,121.

2015: Cinderella - $47,180,932 (Japan)
2014: Maleficent - $63,283,085 (Japan)

Oh, I had not realized it was still waiting for countries.^

I will assume Japan is not as bad as China, I hear studios only get about 25 percent of ticket sales back from China.

Imagine if it manages to sneak past one billion, then Disney will have 5 in 2016 :p

- Captain America: Civil War
- Zootopia
- The Jungle Book
- Finding Dory
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

25%, are you sure? That sounds really low.

Nope 25% is accurate and that's first week only then it gets lower.  That's why most US films only get about 4-5 weeks in China it just isn't worth it for the studios even if there is demand.  (that does not apply to films co-developed with Chinese companys then it's like the RoW).
