Forums - Gaming - 2008 the year of the PS3 or Xbox?

SlorgNet said:
Both the Wii and the PS3 are going to have record-breaking years. The 360 is in a self-inflicted bind - it will never be able to compete with the Wii's mass market on price and functionality, and it has no BluRay/HDDVD capacity, so it can't compete with the PS3 over the long haul.

And no, the 360 can't just drop its price to $300 and expect a sales miracle. Sony is prepared for this - they could easily shave another $50 off the PS3 tomorrow if they had to. (Their margins in the all-important European market, which is catching up to the US market fast, are astronomical.)

This doesn't make sense. Sony can easily drop the price you say, being prepared for X360 price cuts, you're implying that Sony has better margins to drop the price than MS. What makes you believe that? Just because the PS3 dropped by $200 already, and X360 only with $50, you seem to draw the conclusion that the potential to reduce production costs is higher for Sony. Well, that's wrong, plain and simple.

Anyone who isn't somehow blinded by the recent sale success of the PS3 will still remember what caused Sony to drop the price a 2nd time in it's first year: crappy sales and desperation. Sony probably didn't have any room to cut the price to $400 so fast, but they had to do it to save the console, so they did it anyway. And why has MS  only dropped the X360 with only 50 bucks in two years? Well, you could argue about shareholder demands about profitability of the MS entertainment division, but it sure also was a clear sign of confidence. You have to analyze the current sales trends in light of this.

We haven't seen any cost reduction estimations recently for any of the consoles, but all sane logic says that MS is the one who has potential left for drastic price cuts in the near future if nessecary, not Sony. I strongly believe that the X360 Premium version could have been dropped another $100 by now, it's just that MS is strategically saving those price drops for later. Expect to see one very soon though, and with the recent development with rising PS3-sales, Blu-ray winning the disc format war, and what not, expect a drastic one:

X360 Premium will cost $250 within 3 months from now.

Another 10 million consoles sold worldwide by 31st Dec '08.

That's 2008, the year of the Xbox for ya'll.

edit: thank you for fixing the pages.

i think it will be ps3s year because of Metal gear solid 4, final fantasy13,killzone 2, little big planet,, infamous, gran turismo 5, motorstorm 2,resistance 2, haze, burnout paradise, white knight story, africa, grand theft auto 4,and many more games coming out that all look amazing. almost every game i listed isexclusive, except for 2.

the ps3 will start to gain america back by killzone and mgs 4.
i dont know if it will ever catch the wii, but i think the ps3 has a very strong
2008 lineup. i think it will catch the 360 in worldwide maybe in 2009.

MGS4 - Don't get me wrong, it will sell, but I don't think it's going to be the uber seller that people give it credit for. Don't bother arguing with me on this one because I will promptly ignore you-- we'll just have to wait to see who is right.

FFXIII - I thought we were talking 2008-- you're not going to see this game until 2009.

Killzone 2 - I have seen nothing of this game that makes me believe it's going to be any better than Killzone.

LBP - It's interesting but it's not going to sell well at all.

Infamous - I will admit, I know nothing about this game.

GT5 - Of course this will be a big seller

Motorstorm 2 - Has this even been announced yet? Even so, if wouldn't be released in 2008, earliest would be 2009.

Resistance 2 - Same deal as above, expect to see it in 2009

Haze - Probably be big but nothing stellar but I could be thinking that just because I'm not uber excited for the game. Why not, we can put this one on the PS3's big seller list.

Burnout Paradise - It might do well in Europe maybe?

White Knight Story - 2009

Africa - Yeah, ok.

GTAIV - It will be big, but it will be bigger for the 360

So, is that the best you got?

Killzone 2 - It's better than the 1st killzone, though that's not saying much. Could become big simply by hype alone.

LBP - Sony's putting some marketing money behind this. (A lot of it) if done right, ala nintendo, could become big hit with casuals and hard core.

Infamous - Crackdown on steroids.

Resistance 2 - End of 08. Will be far better than 1st game.

Haze - Nothing special about this game, other than it's being developed by Free Radical.

White Knight Story - 2008 (for Japan at least) It'll be a good RPg. Final Fantasy it is not.

Everything else you said was true. (more or less)

What have you seen from Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 to tell you they're better?  I would be willing to admit Killzone 2 *might* be better since it has an infinite budget and time it appears but there's *nothing* out there on Resistance 2.  As far as I'm concerned they will both be just as mediocre as their previous versions.

For LBP, I'm sure it will be a good game but it's not going to sell well at all.  If Sony does decide to advertise it, it will be on one of those commercials where they advertise five other games and it will just get lost.

For Infamous, thank yall for telling me about that one.  I had no idea what it was about and it sounds like it could be interesting.  I'll look into it more before I make any kind of decision about it.  Is it coming out around the same time as GTAIV?  I hope not or else it's going to get gobbled up by it.

You really think White Knight Story is coming out in 2008?  I decided to look around on this and there has been almost nothing shown about this game besides that one E3 video and two small interviews.  This game isn't coming out in 2008.

That is a good question because it is really hard to say. PS3 is bringing out alot of its heavy hitters. Eventhough, 360 does not have as much heavy hitters they do have stuff like Ninja Gaiden 2. Also, 360 has some exclusive games like Alan Wake (if it is still being made which I hope) Left for Dead, and Splinter Cell Conviction which will be a nice match up. These games will help 360 contend with it's competitor. It will be an interesting year, but I am hoping for the best for both of them.

Resistance was the best FPS on any system until fall 2007, so I'm not sure how that's mediocre.   I think it has stood the test of time against Gears due to superior multiplayer.

Man, you really like to say LBP won't sell.  I just hope it's not downloadable because otherwise you might be able to claim to be right.

Just keep attacking PS3's lineup...

I hope NG2 ends up on PS3 eventually. Otherwise, it was a waste of time for them to make Sigma.

haven't heard much on Alan Wake, lately...I'll go ahead and "twesterm" that title and say it's not coming out this year.

Conviction will be as mediocre as it's previous games (another "twesterm" statement).

Yes you are right man about NG2 I hope it does go on both consoles so everybody could experience it. You are right about the sigma deal. Alan wake is a game they kind of not saying much about now, but I am hoping it is good. I do not know about conviction because they have done some different stuff. Lets hope they change the game around. I really was not a big fan of double agent. I can only hope this is good. You made a few good points man I agree with your speculation.
