Forums - Gaming - Are you satisfied with this generation of console’s technical achievements?

Yes. The DS revitalised and revolutionised the handheld market. It's one of the greatest consoles ever made, far better than the GBA which preceded it and in terms of legacy almost certain to be better than the 3DS which follows it.

i'll second that to a point even though i never own'd one, but even a blind man can see wht DS has done for the handheld market. i don't think the 3DS is a big enough leap in tech to do wht DS did.

im satisfied, there are soem games out there that have much better AI, Uncharted 1 and Killzone2 (IMHO). THe only thing that rubbed me the wrong way was motion control, wiimote wasnt 1-1 and when it finally corrected itself it got little support. Sony threw some sixaxis crap in at the last moment, but at least the Move does what it said it would do, but that was a little too late. Kinect is fine but im not convinced that we will play anything good oustide of the minigames and dance games

i'm stealing your opinion and making it mine lol.

i'll agree with you on the AI. i don't think MS or Sony were thinking when they did motion controls but kinect and move are great answers to Wii but they were 5 yrs to late.

i don't think kinect will ever product anything hardcore enough for the hardcore to want to buy kinect for. there won't ever truely be a reason. i look at gunsmith for ghost recon as the best ability for the device but shooting without a gun in your hand really takes away from the game and they could have done gunsmith with PSeye using voice recognition.

for me the 2 devices are to similar to one another with kinect being slightly more advanced, but we don't have to get into all of that. i'll sum it up and say there both good for video voice chat and thats really about it.

Sony really screwd move up by have 3 controllers. if  they could have found away to put anolog sticks on move then we'd really see some hardcore work. Move does wht Sony said it would do, but it killed its self right along with no advertisement.

After witnessing games like Dead Rising, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Gears of War, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, HEAVY RAIN, and, my ultimate, God of War III, I am quite satisfied. Last generation games came nowhere near what these titles have achieved (as they shouldn't have).

That said, I'm nearly burnt out of what's available (even upcoming titles like Gears of War 3 & Uncharted 3 haven't blown me away, considering the earlier titles). That's not to say those titles don't look fantastic, but they can't get "much" better than stuff like Uncharted 2 or God of War III.

By the 2012/2013 threshold, I'll be 100% ready for new hardware.

i find meself agreeing with you all the time. and with this post theres no exception.

Nope. Very underwhelming generation. I guess I expected more with all the buzz of "powerful consolez" at the beginning of the gen. So far, the majority of games that are found on every console and PC gaming are very short 8 hour and below games. Only a few games this gen made me have hope in longer games (MH is one of em, but it still feels last gen).

I think that the DS will always be my favourite console from this generation onwards - for that reason alone this generation has been great

so wht! isn't it best to always want i'm provements anyway? do you have your dream PC right now? does it do everything you want it to do?

So it would be on topic in a thread about this generation's consoles technical achivements to talk about the PC I build 2.5 years ago and since upgraded every component other than the power suply, disc drive and case, and whether it can do everything I want?

Well ok then if you say so.

While I can play litirally every PC game out right now I can't say I am 100% satisfied with what I have but I don't see a new graphics card (so I can play most games at 60fps with 4x AA and grphical powerhouses like Battlefeild 3 (if I decide to get it, I'm not a big multi FPS guy) Metro last light, Far Cry 3 etc) with max details at at least 30fps on high details being worth getting until AMD and Nvidia launch their next gen cards early next year. I mean I can play most multiplats at max details at 30-60fps at 1080p so it's not like I really need it now. And I think would like to jump to a SSD to reduce load times as they aparently make a substantial boost to the experaince with far reduced load times, but they are very expensive still.

I don't think I will ever have my dream rig there is just no way I am going to spend $10k+ on a machine that doesn't make games 10x better than the machine that cost me ~$1.5k ($NZ) over the last 2 and a half years including a 24in 1080p monitor, and I never spent more than $500 at any one time (after the recent price cut the PS3 statarts at around $450 here for reference). Especially considering it would only be a dream machine for ~6 months anyway. Much better to keep upgrading one or two components in the mid range evey now and then to keep playing the games I want at an awsome level which is much more cost effective.

I mean with the current generation of consoles plus the rise of laptops etc it's not like games really require that beefy hardware these days, so I guess I am happy with the current "generation" of PC I have, games look great, play great and Steam sales and great indies keep me busy with a constant stream of great content and experiances for relatively little. But if there is one technical limitation that reall pisses me off it's the current state of broadband in my country with 15GB a month data caps and terrible speeds.

Well ok then if you say so.yes because its a platform on which you game and it advances every wht 3 to 5 month's? PC has done gaming longer and better then consoles so hell yea its ok.  besides your PS is 7th gen.(2.5 yrs ago lol)

TBH I don't think the AI will ever be improved much, simply because the moment you stop knowing how the enemy will behave you are in a huge disadvantage. If 20 enemies are like 20 humans and you fight against them all at once, you're bound to lose, unless you have a ridiculous amount of health or something like that. Even if you fight one single enemy you have a 50% chance of dying.

I think most people feel comfortable with the current AI levels because it's within their reach to learn the patterns, get to know the game, get better at it and beat it. That doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement, but I have the feeling a game will always be a game, that you can learn and beat. Not totally intelligent and unpredictable. For that you have multiplayer.

About other the technological leap yes, it wasn't nearly as big as from SNES to N64 or PS1 to PS2. Expect the generational leaps to get smaller with time, unless something drastic happens in the technological field. So the difference between this and next gen should be even smaller.

But I am satisfied with the current gen, I had fun with it and I await what next-gen will bring. Not all gens are going to have a leap like from 2D to 3D.

when your online your against real, clever people and if you can do alright then you should be ok with human like AI in story mode

Wait... does this mean im not human?

is the Kinect even capable of that??

Ditto

not sure i agree with this, what 3 controllers are you referring too?? If your talking about DS3 and NavController I think SOny was trying to give people options and make it affordable which isnt bad, even though using DualShock 3 with the Move is crap( i caved and just bought the damn Navcontrol). I think your getting pretty hardcore experiences already. Heavy Rain, Resistance 3, Resident Evil 5, Killzone3, those are pretty "hardcore" experiences IMHO. Hell even that new Rune Factory game will be using it.  Yes ads could have been more, but considering that fact and it is the worst selling of the three Sony still manage to get more support than the other 2 peripherials. Dont care how you feel about Move, that is damn impressive. I can see how devs would have problems with Kinect, there is only so much you can do and it would take a while to make a "core" game for it and have it not suck. But Wiimote+?? THat has no excuse
