5.8?!?!?! =P Man, but F' the East Coast, Westside invented the Earthquakes and kept it real.

Are earthquakes over there bigger than those on the East Coast?

...Erm...I would think so.

Never been there, so I had no way to know that.

The West Coast is sitting on one of the most hazardous fault lines on the planet o.0

Damn, people should move from there.

I know right, I could never live there.

Not only is it one of (if not THE) most populated region(s) in America but it's sitting on a fault line that is well overdue a large earthquake.

I shouldn't be criticising though. One of these days there's gonna be a huge earthquake here too, and I'm certainly not doing anything regarding relocation.

You are fairly close to a plate boundary, you should be alright though.

In 1977 there was a massive earthquake where I live, and the city was totaled. Many people died.

...Oh...

Maybe you are a little bit closer to the plate boundary than I thought.

Do houses now have quake proofing? What magnitude was the 1977 one?

The 1977 one had a magnitude of 7.2 and was felt in the entire Balkan Peninsula, and also in the neighboring states of the Soviet Union at the time (Ukraine and Moldova). The town of Zimnicea was vitually destroyed In 1940 there was another big one (7.7) and the biggest one was in 1802 (7.9). The casualties of the 1977 one were: 1.578 dead, 11.300 wounded, 35.000 damaged/collapsed buildings (over $2 bln. worth of damages).

And I'm not sure if my building is quake proofed...

That's pretty bad, I'm sure building quality had improved since then, hopefully another big one won't hit like that again.

all parts of the world have something, some have extreme heat and cold, some get's hurricains or tornados, other places are more prone to tzunamies, volcanoes, flash floods, fires.

California has one of the best climates in the world. Yes there is living knowing that the next big one is coming and not all the infastructure is where it should be, but the standars here are better than many other places in the world.

Something that is funny is most people are nervous about the san andres fault. When it's a big one on the Hayward fault that could really do the most devestation. While a very active zone in the norther part of the state where 3 techtonic plate come together is active but there isn't much population there.
