'I also want to note that the other rationale about having the price drop now is that our arms are wide open for Xbox 360 and Wii consumers to come aboard the platform. We knew with the software lineup we have--primarily on the PS3--the time was right to say we're open to all gamers, whether it's a second console for the household or a new one on the family demographic side. '

This is just too funny. The only gamers that the PS3 is going to appeal to is the core 360 crowd, most certainly not the Wii userbase, and not the majority of people buying 360's right now (kinect)

PS3 is incredibly unappealing as a family/casual console.

Taht said, we're 5 years in, are there many core gamers that are either A) not settled/content with their console and B) already a dual owner? If so it's a small market IMO.

According to who? PS3 is a very good choice for a family/casual console, especially if you're looking for a console that offers every type of experience, in core gaming, casual gaming, and a family device capable of playing BLU RAY movies, 3D movies, 3D content, 3D games, everything you could think of..

it's a very good console for the family, and why wouldn't it appeal to the family crowd in the same way the ps2 appeald to the family crowd last gen..

maybe it's true. However, it is the least appealing console to family/casual crowd comparing to its competitiors.

Also, do you really believe the ability to play 3D movies/content/games would appeal to family/casual crowd? If those are the features family/casual crowdwould look for, then I don't know what the difference is between the core gamers and family/casual crowd.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Not too sure what to say about Sony expecting Wii / 360 owners to join up. If Sony was so concerned about courting these gamers then they would have released the PS3 with a better price.

Well let's say they said the opposite. We don't want Wii / 360 owners to buy our console...

Sony is stating the obvious here, they want both the owners of competiter consoles to switch to theirs and they want new ones.

This was likely only a statement for the shareholders.

Currently playing: MAG, Heavy Rain, Infamous

Getting Plat trophies for: Heavy Rain, Infamous, RE5,  Burnout and GOW collection once I get it.

I also want this hot woman in my profile pic to give me a feet massage..

The idea of getting mobile gamers to switch over to a dedicated handheld system doesn't seem logical. The reason why people play games on mobile devices is out of convenience, not because they are deciding between a mobile platform and a handheld platform. There are very few people who would opt to play a mobile game when a dedicated gaming handheld is just as available to them.

Essentially they're saying something similar, "we want to get all mobile phone users doing video calls on the PS3."

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Just a feet massage? Since you could have wanted anything...

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

They're not trying to take over the mobile crowd. Vita is there as an option for them for more hardcore gaming, which excludes games like angry birds and mario cart and I think they got over 90 different game developers on vita working on games. PS3 first party alone provides more than enough ground breaking content to appeal hardcore gamers. The features alone isn't just for show, and the price will help it in my opinion. That said people will most likely get a ps3, and vita for the 1st/3rd  party games, and any exclusive content. So, I agree with the guy.

Essentially what you're saying is "For those of you who are a part of the mobile gaming audience, here is something that has nothing to do with the games you play, and you need a much larger separate 250€ device to play it on. That approach "this is a hardcore option" doesn't have anything to do with the mobile gaming audience. People who play mobile games do it due to the convenience - they game for a totally different reason, and the same deal exists with facebook users.

There's a bit from this interview that really puts things in perspective.

JK: "No. As I mentioned, we don't look at these price cuts on a short-term basis. We don't react to short-term, week-over-week market trends. We knew going in that the 2009 price cut would probably stand the test of time for a few years, and it did."

The price cut effect has had incredibly good legs. Even now, 2 years since its last cut PS3 sales are still dramatically ahead of 2009.

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 02nd Jan 2011 to 13th Aug 2011:

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 04th Jan 2009 to 15th Aug 2009:

I expect this price cut to have pretty good legs as well.

I understand that they gotta keep it positive.  The new price point might entice some Wii/360 owners that were holding off on the PS3 purchase.  They now have a perfect price point for the PS3 and I wouldn't be surprised if they take the holidays. Basically ,it could be any manufacture that sells the most during the holiday season this year.
