I don't think it's necessarily wrong to remake a classic. There are 3 (rare) examples where I love the remakes nearly as much as the originals:
Seven Samurai (Akira Kurosawa, 1954) => The Magnificent Seven (John Sturges, 1960)
Scarface (Howard Hawks, 1932) => Scarface (Brian De Palma, 1983)
The Front Page (Lewis Milestone, 1931) => His Girl Friday (Howard Hawks, 1940, with Cary Grant & Rosalind Russell) => The Front Page (Billy Wilder, 1974, with Jack Lemmon & Walter Matthau)
All 7 movies are great in my opinion, all of them are classics.
You are right though, I also think it's generally a better idea to take a mediocre or okay movie and try to turn it in a better one. That's why I'm against a Blade Runner remake but all for the announced Westworld remake (and I'd also be interested in a Logan's Run or The Black Hole remake).
We've seen some remakes of SciFi classics in recent years and unfortunately most of them disappointed imo and none was better than the original (The Day the Earth Stood Still, Planet of the Apes, War of the Worlds, I Am Legend, The Time Machine => I was especially disappointed with the terrible Time Machine adaption from 2002, as imo this book is by default the perfect SciFi stuff to be remade from - well - time to time). I can't judge Tron as I haven't seen the remake yet.
