Forums - Sony - SONY: cross-game chat not possible on PS3 because it lacks RAM

Cross-game voice chat is not possible on the PlayStation 3 because of memory restrictions, Sony has revealed.

The PS3's RAM is gobbled up by the games it runs, which prevents the much-desired feature form being implemented, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer.

"Once a game gets RAM we never give it back," he said. "It's not possible to retrofit something like that after the fact."

As revealed by Eurogamer yesterday, PS Vita, due out in Europe early next year, actually has more RAM than the PS3.

Vita has 512MB of RAM and 128MB of V-RAM, compared to the PS3's 256MB of system RAM and 256MB of video RAM. This enables features such as cross-game voice chat to run in the background while games are being played.

On the PS3, however, things are different.

"The game has to use its own memory to do [in-game voice chat]. There's always voice chat in the game. But it's a part of a game feature. It's not a part of an OS feature. That's the reason in terms of the ability to have voice chat across different games."

So, voice chat is better on Vita than PS3?

"We totally agree!" Yoshida replied.

Well, at least they admit it openly and don't try to give us a bs explanation, which is welcome. Not having cross-game chat doesn't bother me too much but I guess some people may not like this.

Yes, but it only took how many years to get this explanation?

I find it hard to talk while gaming even with people inside my house, talking with people online would be harder.
I don't really miss much.

now it's time for them to admit that ps3 cant do in game voice messaging

why didnt they say this 5 years ago?

Amyway its not an issue, PS3 fans dont want it... unless they are holding a Vita and then they do or unless it is a ferature in PS4... they will want it then too.

How many people do you think are excited for the PS Vita for cross game voice chat? Most people are excited for its tech and games than a party feature.

And it would be  pretty stupid of Sony to not include cross game chat in PSV after it being the highest asked feature on PS3.

Well this has been obvious, just glad they finally decided to admit it and stop teasing us

I think you missed my point.

Maybe. I thought your post was sarcasm cause it doesn't make much sense otherwise.

I don't know. I'm not defending their behaviour till now, just saying they admitted it unlike some other bs statements they have made in the past, so it's as much a praise as it is a critique, tbh.

And don't confuse fans with fanboys... I could call myself a PS3 fan, but I wouldn't lie to myself to defend Sony.

It only does insufficient RAM.
