Two stars.
My former interest in nearly every genre was forcibly limited into a selected few. It was also the first gen where I barely liked anything Nintendo even had to offer outside of handheld affairs.
I was saved by Batman: Arkham Asylum, the Gears of War series, and Call of Duty. Were it not for those, this gen would've gotten a straight zero if there was an option for it. Series like NBA 2K existed in the past, and for things like this gen's wrestling games, tried-and-true formulas were ruined miserably. In my personal opinion, there was truly no great JRPG to speak of.
Japan, my God Japan! They made no console games I would rate above 8.5; I don't use a 7-10 scale, I use 1-10.
Mass Effect was a solid exception to my Western RPG (ish) rule, because after Fable 2 & Oblivion I swore off those forever. Metal Gear Solid 4 was a snoozefest and nowhere near as engaging as MGS3. Sony did not make any must-haves and I thought Uncharted 2 was just good; not Game of the Year, just GOOD.
Third parties just made very terrible games consistently, and with 1st parties going insane (WTH no Zelda!?!?), I was left with scraps. This gen sucked, and the next one looks much worse.
Three pros?
More companies will die due to selfish misdirection now.
Consumers will rebel against price gouging by keeping their dollars.
Software has received its just dues, and it is still the only thing that matters - not cinematic developer vision nonsense.
