Forums - Gaming - The Aging of Games Thread

This is a thread where whether games have aged well or not can be conveyed and/or discussed.

Post two games: one you think that aged well and another that you don't think aged well.

It isn't mandatory but an explanation of why you think a game did or did not age well is welcomed.

Also, say whether you agree with the poster above you or not.

I'll start.

Ocarina of Time - Aged well; I still play this game to this day and it's pacing and game mechanics are still a blast.

Goldeneye (N64) - I don' t believe this game has aged well; the shooters of today have such more precise controls that I can't help but feel this game is outdated.

Well, agree or disagree?

Around the Network

OoT: agreed; Goldeneye; disagree. In multiplayer the pure gameplay still stands the test of time.

Tetris: aged well (bit of a cop out, I know) as the gameplay is timeless.

Final Fantasy VII: Aged badly; most games on PS1 have aged poorly but the sprites combined with poor translation and some dated/odd conventions (e.g. you should never set the default of overwrite saved game to "yes") mean this has dated very badly and is why many fans ask for a remake.

Wind Waker aged well.

None of the PSX Final Fantasies have aged well.

Paper Mario aged amazingly.

FFVII is unplayable.

What the!? FF7 looks terrible now, but the mechanics are still great

Aged well - Suikoden 2

Best looking game of the PlayStation generation. Perfect 2D art style, can still be played today. Gameplay is great and the soundtrack's awesome too.

Looks fantastic on both big and small screens.

Aged bad...

Final Fantasy VII. Looks terrible on my TV and the characters are blocky as hell. Music is awesome, but it's just an eyesore now. Needs the Remake!

Agreed.

Aged well: X-COM - I mean really, There hasn't even been a game like it in nearly 20 years.

Aged Badly: Diablo 1

Gran Turismo 2, which was my favourite racer back in the day, has aged extremely badly. I still had the discs so I tried it out again a few months back and was just shocked by how ugly and basic it is. I remember it being so much better...

Man, it seems racers do the worst. I played the earlier Need for Spped games earlier and they all sucked except for Hot Pursuit 2 (which was better than the new Hot Pursuit too).

Final Fantasy IX looks, sounds and simply is amazing. You have no soul. No. Soul. At all.

Also agree with vlad321 on XCOM. It's not the best looking game, but gameplay-wise... There's nothing that's touched it yet. Perfect. 10/10

Machina is also right with StarCraft. Looks, sounds and plays awesome!
